RE: EGR better have it blocked off.. its function is only to minimize NOX by introducing inert gas (exhaust gas) due to too oxygen rich AIR provided by the TURBO.. another one causing intake gunk with carnival (and most diesel or gas engine) is the PCV tube.. oil mist comes with the crankcase ventilation tube (blowby gas) then goes to your intake resulting to oil deposits.. (with EGR ON it will form gunk oil-carbon mixture)
you may have your PCV tube hanging underneath but you have to place an oil catcher or like what i did to fabricate an oil separator...

I don't know if the 2000 model uses this method, but for the 2002 Carnival, you first open the rear tailgate, then unscrew the round plastic thingy using the flat tip of the OEM tire wrench. The plastic thingy is about the size of an old 5 peso coin, and it is located in the rear compartment, where the ribbed plastic scuff pads are. Removing this round plastic cover reveals the nut that you must turn to lower the bracket that the spare tire rests on.
Hope this helps.

anyways...another problematic question..long read, here it goes...
last wed, coming from marikina and going to work(somewhere in pasay)...
while i was going down the libis flyover...namatay ung carnival...inisip ko na baka na release ko lang ung clutch too early while going 1st gear..so i started the car.....then nung nasa bagong airport na ako, ung long stretch ng road...i was driving around 60-70kph here.....the car died again...dito medyo kinabahan na ako...but still, i decided to start the car again while in motion..then it started, car moved a few meters then it died again....while in motion again i tried starting it..but it just crank....then i tried the thing where u put it in first gear..then it started then died...then i decided to call it quits then went to the side of the road...thinking na baka timing belt na....
but while inside the car, i smell something burning...di ko na pinansin..thinking it might be the Tbelt...so i decided to have the car towed sa parking ng work ko....
then nung gabi, lilipat ko sana ung carnival sa ibang parking space....while my wife was inside the car(sya magda drive ako magtutulak with a cousin..hehehe) i told her to turn the key sa "on" position ung nakailaw ung mga icon sa gauge....then i told her to switch the hazard light also...so nung tinutulak na namin..she and i smell something burning..check ko agad makina..wla naman..then i saw few smokes sa driver side where the fuses are located...so i took out the key then turn the hazard switch off also....
then binaklas ko ung panel sa fuse part, not the cover but the whole panel..then i saw a strand of wires burnt....may series ng wire malapit sa fuses where ung blue wire na makapal ang nasunugan.....decided to turn the key sa "on" position and also the hazard light..dito nagloloko na icon ng gauge..then while hazard light is on it made this weird almost like buzz sound....then wire was burining again....so i decided to stop...
hay haba kwento....
anyways..----any of u guys might know what caused it? bakit nasusunog ung wire?
----also, is there anyway to check if the timing belt really broke?
tnx

kenzie,
Here is a photo of the spare tire access cover thingy that I was trying to describe:
Ganito rin ba yung layout sa Carnival mo?
**********
celd15b,
The problem you are describing seems more electrical in nature than timing belt related.
Your best recourse is really to have the van checked by an electrician who is familiar with the Carnival. Sorry, but I do not know of any in your area.

haven't posted for a long time. for everyone's reference Dunlop ec 201 215/70r15s from Ben's OK at Banawe (tel. no. 732-1595) is at P3,250 each. Includes mounting, balancing and rotation. baka pwede pang tumawad.
