Bakit kaya ang mga lumang kotse, sensitive? While driving to Tarlac, I mentioned to my wife that when we eventually sell the Sedona, we should get a smaller vehicle like a Getz so it doesn't attract too much attention. Aba, nung araw din na iyon, etong si Sedona, bumigay ng sabay ang power steering at brakes nya. Ayun, nag-bus kami pauwi ng Urdaneta.
Any idea on what the cause is? The mechanic at Kia Pangasinan, whom I spoke with over the phone, said it might be the cam shaft pulley, but he won't know until he checks the unit out (if I can find a way to tow it there). Well, maybe Kia's really weren't supposed to last more than five years. Sigh. Akala ko pa naman mapapaabot ko sya ng 200,000-km na walang problema sa makina.Last edited by mikey177; April 8th, 2008 at 06:32 PM.

April 8th, 2008 10:09 PM #2193baka nagtampo lang sedona mo kasi sinabi mo papalitan mo na ng getz.... hehe ..
i remember when i was selling my besta van... nung tinitingnan na ng buyer at nagkasundo na sa presyo halos magkabayaran na nga eh sa 150k.. nung sila na mag testing biglang ayaw mag start talagang ayaw na walang man lang redondo yung starter.. so hindi natuloy bilihan napahiya tuloy ako.. pag alis nung buyer eh biglang nag start na at wala na problema... tapos binenta ko yung van sa 160k ayun hindi na nagtampo.. siguro sabi nya masyado sya mura sa 150k kaya nagtampo sa 160k ok na sya hehehe..
sir mikey ano po ba nangyari?? nawala yung power steering assist and power brakes?? kung nawala lang ang assist possible belts and problem or cam shaft pulley ang problem possible nag hiwalay na yan... may symptoms naman yan eh you will hear squeaking sounds especially sa umaga...

^ Sir yapoy, walang squeaking sound sa umaga o kahit habang umaandar yung van. Wala ngang kahit anong unusual na pakiramdam.
What happened was that I was doing errands around Tarlac City midday yesterday, when all of a sudden, as I was about to park I felt sudden loss of power steering. Then, after a few minutes, when I was about to leave the place where I was parked, the brake warning and battery charge lights went on after I started the van. Ayun, naramdaman ko na bukod sa steering, wala na rin yung brakes ko, pero naka-gapang pa rin ako papunta sa parking ng ospital.
Anyway, I'll have a better idea about the problem once the mechanic checks the van out.
Moral of the story: never let your vehicle overhear that you are planning to sell it

Here is the problem so far: When I turn the aircon on, the parking brake and battery warning lights come on and the power steering and brakes cease to function.
Actually, if I keep the steering wheel in a turn for more than a few seconds, the warning indicators also light up, and they go off when the steering wheel is centered again. However, the problem is most noticeable when the aircon is switched on.
The mechanics I consulted diagnosed it to be an alternator problem, but I already had my alternator inspected this afternoon. They replaced an IC and re-installed the alternator, but the problem still persisted.
Then, I remembered sir yapoy's post a few pages back:
Ask first the auto electrician to do what I did like; Re- Solder all connection points especially in the diodes area, replace carbon brush, Reinforcement of the charging pole, and checking the IC regulator for the right amount of voltage. If the alternator has LOW VOLTAGE, signs will be your ABS lights will turn ON, Tachometer drops, If HIGH VOLTAGE, OIL Pressure and parking brake lights will turn on.

April 10th, 2008 10:48 AM #2196have your CRANK SHAFT PULLEY checked... possible that the main drive pulley is already separated from the belt pulley.. normally kasi meron "rubber" sa pagitan nung CRANK SHAFT PULLEY that separates the main drive dun sa belt for absorbing vibration... possible na natanggal na yung rubber... your power steering is mechanical so kahit wala kang battery as long as umaandar ang makina eh meron ka dapat power steering assist also your brake assist is mechanical vacuum pump at the back of the alternator.. i'll post the sample pic of that pulley later...same happened to our BESTA before... bigla lang nawalan ng power steering at brake assist.. tapos umilaw yung battery charging indicator.. pag on ng aircon mahina din lamig... yung pulley pala problema umiikot yung crankshaft pulley pero yung mga nakadikit sa kanya like alternator, aircon and power steering pump eh naiiwan kasi nawala na nga yung rubber damper na connector nila..
kaya nag ilaw yung battery charging mo kasi hindi na umiikot yung alternator mo naiiwan na especially pag may load yung belts when you turn the power steering... (alternator and power steering share the same belt) same thing pag nag on ka ng aircon.. yung parking brake lights nag on kasi connected yan sa battery charging indicator try mo na disengage yung parking brake before starting the engine you will notice kahit hindi ka naka parking brake eh naka ilaw pa rin yun.. but once you start it will go away together with the OIL pressure indicator and battery charge indicator
pa check mo agad yung CRANKSHAFT PULLEY medyo mahal lang yan...

^ sir, bullseye ang diagnosis mo sa problema.
The technician at the casa removed the wheel and the plastic guard covering the part of the engine bay where the pulley was, and sure enough, the inner and outer portions were not moving in synch anymore, especially when the aircon is on.
Now my only problem is waiting for the part to arrive from Kia Pampanga. Sigh.

you can order that part sa FRONTE dito sa banawe or good gear sa may pasay... more or less nasa 4,500 pesos yan.... yung sa akin kasi when i heard na may squeaking soung na pinalitan ko agad... same with our besta before parang every 5 years bumibigay yang part na yan...sa besta namin na 2times palit kami sa mazda 323 ko din nagpalit me ng ganyan when i hear squeaking sound (given that belts and bearings are good)

That's crazy to realize that the brakes are dependent on the belts and alternator, so if the belts snap (it happens) you don't have braking assistance. Now I'm wondering why Kia didn't just tap the intake manifold for manifold vacuum and route it to the brake booster, that way you can still get vacuum when the engine is on so you can safely pull over the side of the road. Is it a diesel?
Nonetheless ang galing ng bullseye diagnosis, I'm glad nothing worse happened.
On another note hindi ba pwede magpa machine ng metal part to replace that rubber component that allows the crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer to work in tandem? That way you don't have to worry about having to replace it in another 5 years again. Yapoy is right have the crankshaft seal done na rin and possible even the timing belt if it has a belt (or chain).Last edited by mbeige; April 11th, 2008 at 07:51 AM.

April 11th, 2008 12:54 PM #2200the rubber between the pulley is INJECTED so we cannot replace it by metal otherwise we need to have it permanently welded.. but it may have an effect on your crankshaft bearings as it was designed to absorb vibration to protect the bearings and other moving parts especially modern engine can do very high RPMs..
regarding the brake assist.. kia carnival has a vacuum reserve tank to provide vacuum assist in the event that the engine suddenly stall while running or during hard braking or the belts snap...intake manifold vacuum doesn't have enough vacuum to assist this very large and heavy minivan.. it is only applicable for light vehicles.. i know it is now a safety standard to every vehicle to have a vacuum reserve tank..
for sir mikey177 problem he lost the vacuum since the alternator was not moving at proper speed. unfortunately the vacuum is supplied by the vacuum pump of the alternator.. same thing will happen if it was placed in the intake manifold and suddenly the engine stalls like for example busted timing belt same thing will happen you will have loss of power brake assist!! bottom line is always be aware and do not rely so much on this power brakes and steerings you should be always ready for cases just like these and always know what to do...
sir mikey177 didn't loss the brakes , its only the vacuum assist that has been lost making the brake hard to apply...
