    cyann21,
Since the van overheated previously, the cause of the coolant being used up frequently could be a warped cylinder head (maybe). Diesel operate under very high pressure compared to gasoline engines so when the engine overheats there is a higher probability of engine damage. Dripping coolant is an indicator of pressure build-up in the cooling system. This could also come from a problematic cylinder head. The fact that the coolant gets used up is abnormal. This means that there is so much heat and pressure in the engine that the water in the cooling system evaporates. Try to check if the there is dried up coolant at the joints of the hoses or if the hoses are hot and bloated after an hour's drive. Remove the cap of the coolant reservoir (NOT the radiator cap) after you drive and observe if steam comes out. Watch the engine temp too while driving, if it swings to the danger zone, stop, and let the engine cool down and check the coolant. If you experience these things, chances are you may need to have an engine overhaul or at least a cylinder head overhaul. I doubt if the thermostat is the problem.

I have experienced all this in my Carnival. Don't delay like I did. It can become expensive. I hope this helps.

sir i just hope its not minor of a problem... and sana hindi warped yun cylinder head!!!! i'm really getting worried kasi summer is coming and wifey gets annoyed for the constant expenses on maintaining this vehicle.

i don't know maybe it's time to let go...

Couldn't help but comment on the apprehensions on the Carnival's engine.

I have a 2000 LS and it already has 135T kms under its belt. It could have been more but it has been my wife's car two years ago. I had my unit serviced by Signet EDSA during its first 4 years since I was apprehensive about the familiarity of the neighborhood mechanic re the engine. It was expensive but I had some peace of mind while traveling.

So far the problems I have experienced were:
    - the stock Hankook tires (one burst at NLEX and another at SLEX)
    - the alternator which started busting a diode yearly starting year 3. This was remedied by replacing the alternator.
    - paint job of the scoop, front bumper and spoiler which had flaked off
    - cd player which stopped playing discs after year

    Major parts already replaced were:
    - all engine supports (once)
    - timing belts and related parts (once)
    - all suspension parts (some twice)
    - alternator
    - center bearing(?) this was kind of expensive. The mechanics placed a mark during one PMS and noticed it has moved after sometime and I was advised to replace it.
    - signet also replaced the muffler/exhaust system free of charge on the first year when I noticed loss of power. It appears that the muffler clogs up easily when the vehicle is used here (may be the fuel).
    - aircon had regular maintenance so there's no problem with the cooling

Right now I bring my unit to Rapide Alabang for PMS and maybe to Signet again after 20T kms as casa service is really draining. Bottom line, my Carnival has not given me any major or persistent headache up to now. My suspicion is with casa maintenance is that it's not consistent among branches. Some are good, some otherwise, and I guess I'm lucky that my unit has reached its mileage without any major breakdown. So I guess I'll monitor my Carnival for a while, see how long it's gonna take before I get pissed with it, but I'm really hoping it won't come to that since I really like the van.

    altec:::

Sorry to hear about your continuing vehicular woes.

I'll probably be driving the Sedona for three more years, since we're still paying for our other vehicle.

lately i've been hearing metallic sound (parang kumakaskas na yero-hindi yung nakakangilo but rather like when you drag it against the ground, only more irritating) from the engine of my kia carnival during cold start up but slowly goes away as the engine warms up (although with the cold weather today in the early morning, there is still audible metallic sound after a 40 minute drive).

aside from the sound, i did not notice anything unusual. malakas pa rin ang hatak, wala din usok except in sudden acceleration.

what do you think is the problem? i am planning to bring it to the mechanic this weekend as it is already due for an oil change but i want to have an idea before i go there. TIA

singit-singit...ask ko lang kung ok sa price nya at kung matatawaran ko pa mga magkano kaya?

2003 kia carnival park II crdi, 66T kms, full options, leather seatcover has no cracks, well, sound of the engine is like the sound of a typical carnival(but louder sa new 2007 engine ha), AT engages smoothly, but needs detailing (mantsa build up on the doors) no oil drips

asking 400T... what are the things i should be of more concern....

Sounds similar to my unit before all this injection pump fiasco. That noise could be from the idler bearing that needs replacement. Anyway, have that checked, the idler timing belt, auto tensioner, pulley damper. It could be any of these.

Update. My car still in the shop. Ok na yata ang injection pump, but the calibration shop and Kia casa havent really checked on this because of my electrical problem. After investigating what happened, somehow, the calibration shop screwed up my electricals. My dashboard is lighting up, my stereo doesn't function. They jumpered the battery because it was weak, and somehow screwed up everything. My mechanic even told me when he visited, they transferred the ground wire that caused some short circuit as there is a burning smell. Initially, the casa thought it could be the alternator as it was registering high voltage output. Pero still di pa rin ma correct. Now, they are suspecting the ECU. Ouch! 30k+ daw. i have withheld payment to the calibration shop, threatening to issue stop payment to the bank for the pdc. I have 3 other pumps that I had done with them, on 30 days PDC.

    Always Yummy:

I think the price is par for the course. Ask the previous owner if he had replaced the timing belt and bearings because at this mileage and age it needs to be replaced. Replacing these parts would amount to about 15k including labor. If you can still haggle for reduction of the price for possible repairs would be great. Also check if the electricals of the unit you are eyeing is all in order because it could be a pain to repair. BTW,the unit looks very nice.

I've been looking for a pre-owned carnival park with full options two years ago because of the bells & whistles that comes with it, but had to settle for a local unit because of budget constraints.

yup it looks nice talaga... maalaga yung owner(coding car lang din)

    a so t.belt, bearing, ATF??

yung power-rear vent window di masyado nabubuksan--i heard the rubber unstuck once i opend it (and the owner dont know much about the feature)..may time ako magisip kahit paano--ung owner wala masyadong plans ibenta ung van,e...sa akin lang nalaman na pinost pala ng pamangkin nya ata...

    2 uri lang naman ng carnival-sedona hanap ko--imported CRDi-park edition, or LS-manual..salamatz!
