Car of the Year Philippines 2011 - 2012 is off to a good start

It looks like the search for the 2011-2012 Car of the Year - Philippines (COTY-P) is off to a good start! Over a dozen of Philippine's motoring journalists gathered last Sunday, 11 September 2011, at the All Terra Cyclery, located in the Ortigas Home Depot complex.

As one might recall, Car of the Year testings are done in two phases. The first phase, as we had done and will continue for the next few Sundays, is the subjective testing, where cars are judged by their looks, feel, and performance subjectively based on the tester’s experience as motoring media. The second phase is the technical test, where cars are tested on acceleration, braking, and handing to produce objective numerical data.

Aptly our appetizers and first on the chopping board were small cars - Suzuki Swift, Kia Picanto M/T and A/T, and Lifan LF 320 - with a dash of luxury - Nissan Teana 3.5L V6 - in the mix. When asked about his feelings about this year’s COTY-P, Ferman Lao, President of the Car Awards Group, Inc. (CAGI) and Editorial Director of Kotse.com, said, “We have a lot of new cars now. I'm actually looking forward to testing all those cars, because a lot of them are all new models and they're a big jump over the previous models they're replacing. And if the first batch is any indication, it's going to be a very difficult decision for [CAGI].”

It’s no wonder CAGI members were eager to test each unit on the lineup. Lao adds, “Every year, the competition gets tighter. It is getting more difficult to choose which car would rank a little bit better than its co-competitors. Because essentially, as the years go by, all the cars are getting better.”

With the sun up high and the weather roasting us to a crisp, it was a welcome coincidence that traffic was unusually little along Julia Vargas Road that day. The little cars were able to zip down the roads, while the Teana went on its leisurely runs. Personal favorites of the day were chosen, unsurprisingly; but by the end of the test day, there were many feelings all around. The boys of Kotse.com have these to say:

The new 2011 Swift has very much improved, though impressive and familiar at the same time compared to the old one. Space was better in almost all dimensions with the rear passengers receiving a much welcome increase in livable space. A welcome surprise was how premium the integrated audio system was, as well as how seamlessly smooth the automatic transmission shifted. Finally, despite the heavy flogging it received, its most astounding feat was the miserly 10 km/L fuel consumption. Suzuki Swift fans rejoice!

Chinese cars have certainly improved over the past few years, such as the Lifan LF 320. Build quality might not yet be up to par with today's high standards, but everything seems to be holding up very well. It feels safe and sturdy going around the city, although the 1.3L engine could use a bit more power going up steep grades. Sadly, not everyone though will fall head over heels for the LF 320's looks and its P498,000 price tag is hard to justify against the likes of the new Picanto and Spark. However, these oriental autos do look promising and we can't wait what they'll have to offer in the years to come.

I always have had an impression of driving these little cars as being an experience as exciting as waiting for grass to grow. There's enough space for two full sized adults in front and two more at the rear with enough legroom. Acceleration is surprisingly brisk, not the snail's pace I was expecting from the 69 hp three-cylinder 1.0L engine. The ride is a touch on the firm side but still comfortable overall, even when running over the occasional potholes. The lack of road and engine noise, as my previous experiences with small cars, was a real eye-opener. By the end of my drive, my opinion of small cars has changed. Small sub-compacts like the 2011 Kia Picanto 1.0L EX A/T has improved so much that they are actually practical, good value and even (God-forbid) a little fun to drive. It looks like CAGI has its work cut out for it.

Hi ask ko lang po yung sa new kia picanto A/T e 175/50/15 yun tire size based sa website kase nila yun ang nakalagay. And any idea san makakabili ng tire with the said specs mukhang wala or mahirap maghanap ng tire spec dito sa pinas na ganyan.
