a friend is asking me to find him a 2nd hand Starex ('99-'00). Is it a good buy? since i'll be looking at a 2nd hand car, what are the most common problems you've encountered or heard of?

well, i have an starex 99 turbo intercooler A/T here are the pro's and con's
    pro's
    1. space! it's huge inside... kahit apat pa isakay mo sa second row kasyang kasya. pag habol mo space.get the starex.
2.convinience... kun meron ka lalagay na malaking gamit sa likod, you can eaily fold the third row in one minuite , and just think, yung space na malalagay mo a likod X3 sa trunk ng car, i mean its huse too, unlike ford club wagon na kailangan tools pa ang gamit to fold the third row
    3. good family car....ndi ka magsisisi dahil pag ndi maganda ang starex, walang bibili....este wala ka palang makikita sa kalsada
4.proven diesel engine..... 1 of the best diesel engine i,ve driven, and best of all, it is powerful, kahit paakyat na super steep, aakyat pa din, ndi iiyak ang gulong.
    5. value for money.... wala pang 1M and sulit, unlike others ( hi-ace grandia, sedona, venture)... they cost 1m plus
    6. malambot upuan
    7. excellent suspension! it has much bigger tires, and coil spring, and mas maganda kapg mas mapigat ang van, dahil kapag mag isa ka lang nagdadrive, sobra malakas body roll pag dumaan ka sa uneven na road...
    8. cold aircon....ndi ka kakapusin sa lamig.
    9. marami na spare parts availale
    10. mas ok diesel compare to gas at this time dahil mag cheap ang diesel.
    11. wala ka problema sa smoke emmition test provided you take proper maintenance in car..
    12. very useful!
    13. intimidate due to huge size
    14.maliwanag! malakas fog lamps
    15. soft steering wheel
    con's
    1. shift shock for A/T
    2. slow acceleration even if it's turbo charged.
    3.takaw sa mata
    4. cheap plastics and fake wood inside
    5. not so good mileage , i only get 1 is to 6...
    6. blind spot front right side..kailangan masanay ka to get used to
    7. weak brakes!
    8. korean tires is very bad, mabilis mpudpod!, (HANKOOK) , better change it to bridgestone D

naaalala ko sa mga old topics sa kotse.com marami nang ganitong topics, i dunno if its true pero may mga nag comment dun na madali raw kalawangin ang mga starex? maybe it has something to do with its rustproofing.

It's just like owning a Mitsubishi.

    sauman,

The rust problems have been solved in the Millenium Series (the ones with the big chrome grilles).

sa mga korean cars/vans, generally yung mga parts are more easily prone to wear and tear. mas mabilis palitan compared sa mga japanese.

ha! frank drebin is right... malit lang ang kaya ibksan na window sa likod, pero its a good thing becoz para makaiwas na din sa "bukas bintana gang", dahil pag sliding type yung window sa likod (like hi-ace) , kaya ito buksan usinga long sharp thing..about hbk, yes, yung idling nagloloko din, pero a adjust mo lang sa may makina.... and about the aircon, sa akin cooling coil pa lang nasisira so far 5,500 php $$$ damn..., dagdag ko pa sa pro's is ang starex mas ndi prone sa overheat, tatlo kasi ang fan sa makina, 1 big fan and 2 auxilliary fan..

Some owners overlook the fenders when cleaning their cars. Dito madalas nagsisimula ang rust left and right front fenders. What I like is the A/C, ang lamig! Plus yung seat config ng 9 seater versions, pwede ihiga ng flat at maging kama from 2nd row to 3rd row. Just like papa tots pointed out, I have changed brake pads front and rear from 3 years of use. We got Kumho brand tires, after 2 years bumukol agad, so I changed them to wider specs at 225/70R15 and switch to a much reputable brand. And I also like the roof rack capacity, 80kgs. at max weight, (I tried to jump on it and not a bent!). Not like some other vehicle brands where a warning sign is sticked "For Display Purpose Only!"

I'll just add about the engine, it has oil cooler! Kaya hindi ito prone sa overheating even while the van is on idle with A/C on.

Isa lang ang solusyon diyan - use Mitsubishi parts. :D
