April 18th, 2010 02:28 PM #21Yes, prices in Pinas are much higher than in the US because of customs duties, which basically DOUBLE the selling prices of cars here.
Still, Hyundai has indeed raised its prices way beyond its previous levels and often with less trim & accessories. Basically, they have abandoned their old strategy of value-for-money market penetration which was responsible for the Gen 3 Starex being totally dominant in the market.
IMO, only the genesis coupe and Santa Fe are value-for-money offerings now (though I heard the SF will also soon get a hefty price increase).
They might be selling more now than they used to (partly because of more models), but the 4th gen Starex has much less market share here now compared to the 3rd gen.

That's only because it's old. but whether or not they buy it, Ford can price the Escape lower because of the local plant. This plant is also the only reason they can sell the DCT Focus TDCi here for a competitive price. If they had to import it from their European factories, it would cost around 1.5m.
