September 13th, 2010 10:31 PM #1631Hi Guys,
Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between a Gen4 Starex and a Gen3 Starex?
TIA

I used to own a Gen3 TCi AT (sold it last Feb), and now I own a Gen4 TCi AT (bought it almost a year ago)...
Here are the differences at the top of my head:
1. Gen3 has a setting on the headlight switch that will automatically turn the headlights on at dusk or when passing through tunnels; GS does not have this.
2. Gen3 has setting on the windshield wiper that makes it intermittent when running slow and regular when running fast; GS does not have this feature, only intermittent
3. GS has less body roll than Gen3
4. GS turns off its headlights when you turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition; Gen3 does not have the feature
5. Gen3 has only one sliding door; GS has two

Sir CVT, Why did you get a Gen4 with TCi engine when there is a CRDI-VGT engine available? Isn't the TCi engine underpowered? In terms of Fuel Consumption, which is more economical, the TCi engine or the CRDI-VGT engine? TIA

September 22nd, 2010 01:29 PM #1635Hello everyone
This is my first post here. Ive been reading this thread and am thinking of getting a grand starex. I hope you can help me decide.
The difference in price between the TCI manual and VGT manual is around 300K. Is the VGT really worth the big price difference? Is the TCI underpowered for normal city driving or like going up Tagaytay or Baguio? Is the maintenance different for each model?
Would really appreciate your insights regarding this. I will be using the van to shuttle my kids to school and for out of town driving.
Thanks
Ed

September 23rd, 2010 10:04 AM #1636Sure, will give you a quick answer although it might be a good idea to backread all the way up to 2008 to see some of the responses regarding TCi vs. CRDi VGT for the Grand Starex. I'm not the only one who posted about this in the past.
All I can say is that if you have the extra P300K, then go for the VGT. However, if the lesser HP and torque doesn't bother you, then the TCi will suit you fine. We've had our TCi M/T for almost 3 years now and in no driving situation did I feel that it was underpowered. I would rather look at the CRDi as more than adequately powered, having said my previous sentence. I've been all the way to Pagudpud (11 hours driving including a 30 minute stop), Baguio via Marcos Highway, Banaue to Baguio via Aritao, etc. etc. and I never was placed in a precarious situation due to lack of power. I think it all has to do with driving skill, especially in incline situations along zigzag roads.
Now if you plan to use the GS to shuttle your kids to school, then it's an ideal vehicle...whether 2 kids or even up to 6 kids, they'll be happy with the space. And with the 10 seater, the rear compartment is generous enough for up to 6-8 big schoolbags (unlike the 12 seater). More so on the high end variants (the CRDi 10 seater with swivel seats) since the last row can be slid forward to make more luggage space, or slid backward to allow for more legroom for the passengers at the back.
One other thing: it will depend who will drive the kids to school and in most driving circumstances. If most of the time it will be a driver, get the TCi. You don't want him racing down major streets and highways with your kids in tow. If it is you, then go for the CRDi. You'll be happy with the extra power and torque when you need it. If your main consideration is fuel economy, theoretically the CRDi is more fuel efficient, although I'd say within a 10-15% band, but not as great as 20-30%. Averages would be 6-7km/li for both TCi/CRDi in city driving, while about 8-9.5km/li for the TCi and 8.5-10km/li for the CRDi in highway driving. If you're interested in top speed, the TCi can hit 160kph while the CRDi has gone to 200kph. No pushover for a large van
This is just a quick overview of the basic differences. Now if you want a more detailed explanation on the cost/benefit analysis of the CRDi vs. TCi engine, you can check the Grand Starex section of www.teamhyundaiph.com (just register for the forums to be able to access). There are a lot of people over there who are willing to help.

September 23rd, 2010 11:50 AM #1637Thank you for the very detailed reply. It is much appreciated as I really got the answer I needed. But i will still check the website you recommended for other info.
The van will be driven primarily by the driver within Makati so I dont really think I need the CRDI VGT model. Our out of town trips are also quite few and far between for this to merit the stronger engine.
Although it makes me wonder why Hyundai still opted to use this old engine in the Grand Starex, considering that the last version of the previous model Starex already had a CRDI engine. Even though it didnt have the VG turbo. Im not really sure, but the old engine seems to be only offered in Grand Starex models for the Philippines.
Thanks again for your valuable help.

just a quick inquiry, mga Starex owners.
vehicle is Starex VGT. Normal ba na upon starting sa umaga, may WHITE SMOKE na binubuga but after 3 secs, clear na naman...
sorry for this question, medyo nanibago lang coz in other diesel vehicles, black smoke sya and mas matagal ang buga bago mag-clear.
thnx

Are the TCI models still available in HARI dealers? I am leaning towards the TCI A/T.
