Water pump is shut. Do not drive your car or your risking more engine problem. When you replace the water pump you might have change the timing also. Now dont say's belt still okey, no its not okey consider the fact that it will cost you more or the engine itself if you try to save a small amount of money.

You didnt mention how many miles on the car. Could it be due for a new timing belt The timing belt has a tensioner (pulley) that could be going bad and allowing slack in the belt, causing the noise. A high inference motor will cause the valves to come thru the cylinder heads if this belt breaks.
Bring your car to a good shop do a compression test to make sure oil is lifting up from the oilpan. You probably need a new oil pump, cause the rod bearings, lifter etc... are knocking because there's very little oil between them and the crankshaft when you fire it up. As soon as the oil pump pushes oil in there, it quiets.

thank you very much for the tip sir. it has around 160K on it before the speedo crashed so i guess its in the 180K range now. they say that timing belt replacement is better done with water pump changing to save on labor - is the water pump reservoir the same thing that i used to fill up for my window washers? i don't see any leaks but the water does go down everyday i check it. please advise. i will definitely do the compression test and have my pumps and filters checked on too.
