I guess this is the common failure of most Honda AT cars at the turn of the century. The AT tranny, if not properly taken cared of, will succomb to sliding and failure. Not to mention that Honda uses a specific type of ATF fluid which does not mix well with retail ATF thus causing seals and gaskets to fail. Even the CVT of the City/Jazz of the said era is also prone to failure if not properly taken cared of. Another thing to watch out for is the power steering system which also uses a Honda-specific PS fluid. It is common for some old Hondas to have a leaking PS system, despite undergoing overhaul or repair.

Definitely the Mazda 3 2.0R is a better buy than the 2004 Civic (ES). That Civic isn't the FD body yet - still uses the old 1.6 engine, though the 2.0 uses the K20 and 5AT of the FD.
The Mazda 3 has much better handling than the ES Civic. You feel confident taking corners at high speed because the steering is very communicative and the car grips very well.
As for outright speed, the 2.0 Mazda 3 definitely out-accelerates the 1.6 Civic, though the 2.0 Civic is faster on a straight line due to better gear ratios (5AT vs 4AT). The biggest downer with the Mazda 3's performance is its second gear which is very very long (60 kph at 3k rpm, redline at 120 kph). On expressways like NLEX though, the powerband is just right - downshift to 2nd gear at 80, rev all the way to redline, shift to 3rd, and before you know it, you're redlining 3rd gear at 180 kph.
The Mazda 3 has so-so FC, around 6 km/L, which is worse than the Civic 1.6's 7-8 km/L but about the same as the Civic 2.0.
AC performance of the Mazda isn't freezing, but strong enough to keep the car cool under the midday sun.
