good choice ang accord kung ang habol mo ay yung looks at angas factor. sarap pa sakyan. accord vs. civic, although medyo magkamuka yung 96 civic at 95 accord (angular shape), mas malapad at mas malaki in all dimensions yung accord - pati na makina. the only problem is, medyo malakas sa gas ang accord. and this prob is due to two things: bigger displacement + heavier body. kung medyo gamit na yung engine mas malakas pa.
yung alog na sinasabi mo could be one of many things: 1. biyak at maluwag na engine mounts (3 yun), 2. vacuum assist sys leak (may singaw yung vacuum system nya kaya parang palyado/namamatay at umaalog pag pumepreno), 3. or plain kulang lang sa maintenance (masikip/maluwag valve tappets, barado air filter/intake system, sunog na mga sparkplugs, pa-sira na yung hi-tension wires, etc etc).
basta walang lumalabas na black or white smoke at idle or acceleration, hindi nag ooverheat, at palyado, ok pa makina nyan. tibay mga honda engines.
just don't expect to get 10km/liter jan. 5-6 is fine, 7-9 is excellent (10-11 mali ang pag compute mo hehe joke). 2-4 is very bad, 5-9 depends on how you drive (fast/slow?). things to check with your cousin before you hand over your money:
1. timing belt/waterpump/thermostat/thermoswitch kung napalitan
2. clean radiator (nag overheat na ba?)
3. anong fluid nilalagay nya sa transmission? kung a/t dapat atf-z1 lng sa honda. pag iba wasak yan.
4. any weird rattles/squeaks sa engine?
5. dapat walang oil leaks kahit saan.
6. do the instruments work?
9. how's the oil look like? hinde ba amoy sunog, dark, or may buo-buo?
10. how's the aircon? malamig ba at walang singaw?
150T is an ok price i guess. 170T is pushing it, BUT if your cousin guarantees na lahat walang problema, then i guess its ok. be prepared to live with higher than normal gas consumption though. by design, the accord was never meant to be frugal kasi. it's a luxury type vehicle after all.
after you get the car, dalhin mo sa honda tuning specialists like forcedspeed to have the valve clearance adjusted. mas mura dito kesa sa casa. any unusual engine noise should disappear after some tuning. honda engines are precision machines that demand adjustments every now and then.
depending on whether its been done before you buy it, ibaba mo lahat ng fluids, pati oil. take advantage of the promos sa casa (oil change 850 sa honda). air filter back to orig, as well as spark plugs.
palit brake pads pag ubos na... and then you're good to go. start accesorizing, hehe.
goodluck.

April 23rd, 2008 03:11 AM #22Sir Voltscastillo,
Wow. Talagang ganda ng mga replies mo boss... Elibs talga.
What I can answer from what my other cousin who tested the car from my cousin who is selling the car. gulo no? cousin selling car=father side=i'll call him cousin F----cousin who tested the car=mother side=call him cousin M...
10. Aircon is ok. Malamig daw wala napansin na problema cousin M.
9. Oil is ok daw pero sabi ng cousin F ko papalitan daw nya ng bago un before i come.
6. Opo gumagana mga indicators and stuff.
5. Wala daw po.
4. This not sure i'll ask when cousin M wakes up madaling araw ata ngaun dun. The only thing he said was medyo meron daw siya nararamdaman na squeeks kapag nakamenor sya o kukuha ng bwelo. Am not sure what he meant better ask him to clear it up. am not sure if it is a minor squeek or a major garalgal. Lilinawin ko po.
3. This am not sure pero sent him a text message to use this oil when he changes the fluid. Sabi kase nya babaguhin daw po nya lahat. As in major big time ayos daw para mabago lahat. Tapos sinabi naman nya na kung meron ako hindi gusto paguwi ko sabihin kolng daw at sya na bahala lahat maintenance and parts ek-ek, basta lahat daw po sya sasagot if unsatisfied ako.
1. Kaialangan po ba bago un pagnakita ko? As in when you purchase one obligated ba un seller na palitan ung mga parts na un?
1st owner daw po ung me ari na friend nya. He has 2 more cars and recently got a toyota truck.nakalimutan ko name ng truck. luxury car din. Kaya he is selling his oldest car that is in his garage. eto nga pong accord.

Zekegoode - Lesson number 1, when purchasing a 2nd hand vehicle, always check the car personally. Okay lang kung brand new.
95 Accord nasa 140-150k range. P170k is high. For me, Accord is better than Civic if budget for maintenance is not an issue.
Also, prices of Civic VTI 96-2000 ranges from P170k to P250k. A friend just bought a 98 VTI for only P180k.

boss zeke, boss honismitoy is right... 140-150 lng ang accord. pero marami-rami ka na pagawa dito sa price range na ito.
timing belt/waterpump, etc... given na ito. these engine components fail over time. you wouldn't want it if the timing belt breaks while you're out of town... nasty. best to be on the sure side of things.
sounds like your cousin will do a full rehab for you. that's great. if he promises to take care of most of the stuff, then you'll get a good deal if you trust him enough. kasi to be honest, kung pagawa mo lahat on your own yung sinabi ko, medyo kulang yung 20K. and that's just to ensure that the car runs reliable. wala pang porma or accessories yun.
assuming he already took care of everything, i would still do the ff:
1. change oil to ANY 10w-30/40 oil.
2. change a/t fluid to atf-z1 (560/liter sa honda)
3. have the valves checked and adjusted (your choice kung sa honda or honda specialist shops. NEVER EVER sa rapide/servitek/gas station).
these 3 things kasi get overlooked lagi. lots of guys in the past nasisilaw sa promo sa oils (including me). until i realized that most promo oils come in 20w-50 viscosity. it's too thick. so its not fuel efficient.
nawasak ko na yung 96 LXi a/t ng sister ko nun when i insisted on using castrol dexron 2/3 spec oil. kako, impossible na mas maurnong gumawa ng fluid yung honda, at mas mura ito ng 100 per liter. ayun sira. these days i only use atf-z1. sakit lng sa bulsa, pero mas masakit sa bulsa ang transmission overhaul na nasa 30k these days.
most mechanics na hinde taga honda hinde alam na inaadjust ang valves ng honda engines every year or so. kasi yung mga mitsu at toyota hinde naman kelangan iadjust as often. pero that's the curse of honda engines - we have to live with it. you can leave it as it is, pero eventually, maiinis ka sa pangit na takbo. big difference sa performance, i tell you.
yun lng. hope we helped you decide on your purchase. goodluck.

April 23rd, 2008 07:55 AM #25Sir honismitoy,
I would if I could sir. I mean you are right kailangan talaga physically present ka kapag me gusto ka bilhin. That is why I ask my cousins to look at the car since pagalis ko dun sa kanila naman maiiwan un. Sabi ng insan kona seller 170k lahat lahat na po un pati gawa as in bibigay nya sakin na parang virgin un auto with all the paperwork.
Thank you po reply.

January 31st, 2011 06:48 PM #27I think 170k is a little too much for me....plus the Accord isn't exactly reputable in terms of gas mileage.....
for the kind of money you mentioned, you can afford a Civic VTi manual or automatic '96, '97,maybe up to '98 LXi stick
and you'd really be goin' for a car with 'big eyes' as you say with those!
