    Some important things to remember...

Pictures! Take lots of them. Don't just record the actual damage(s), but also take wide shots of the vehicles to include plate numbers and identifying marks on the vehicles, as well as the surroundings like landmarks, tire skid marks, direction of the front tires upon impact, etc. Think like a forensic expert. I would even go as far as take pictures of the other party's drivers license and maybe even his mugshot. If you had the right of way, the pictures may be of invaluable help to solidify your case or for some other uses.

Also, if both cars are still driveable, go to the precinct as a convoy, with you following the other car. GH's advice on getting hold of his license beforehand is a good practice, if it has not yet been taken by the traffic investigator.

When writing the detailed events for the police report, shift from being a forensic to somewhat of a lawyer. Be factual, specific and don't write anything that can be downplayed by the other party. So, instead of saying, "He made a left turn on....", say "He made an illegal left turn on...", as the case may be.

    Good luck!
