Greetings from Cebu. Crime is rampant here nowadays. May incident daw dito recently na a snatcher tried to grab the bag of a lady near Robinsons. Eh lumaban yung lady. Nung papatakbo na raw yung thief, may pumutok at bigla na lang bumulagta. 'Yun daw pala, a guy riding his car saw the incident. Bumaba daw sa kotse then pinaputukan yung thief. He made sure na patay then umalis daw casually as if nothing happened.

I wonder why cellphone manufacturers haven't thought of cell-phones that have stun guns on them, that you can activate remotely?

2 cellphone thieves get death sentences
(The Visayan Daily Star, Carla Gomez)

A complex crime of robbery with homicide

Two cellphone thieves who also killed their victim were sentenced to death in Bacolod City yesterday for the complex crime of robbery with homicide.

Regional Trial Court Judge Roberto Chiongson meted the death penalty on Eduardo Pandes Yanson, alias Junjun and Bad Boy, 21, and Vicente de la Peña Flores, alias Bongbong, 18.

They were also ordered to pay the heirs of their victim, Michael Salmorin, P807,840 as compensatory damages, P30,000 for his burial, P100,000 to his wife, Yolymar Salmorin, as moral damages, and P50,000 as death indemnity.

The ownership of a cellular phone brings convenience and unexpected danger, Chiongson said, pointing out that such was the faith of Salmorin who, on Jan. 29, 2004, lost his life to cellphone thieves.

Salmorin, 29, was a salesman at a Bacolod mall while his wife Yolymar, 26, is an employee of the National Food Authority in Bacolod City.

The couple have a daughter named Kyla.

At 11 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2004 Salmorin was sending a text message while at the 22nd Street near the Ama Computer School in Bacolod City when the two ganged up on him, stabbed him, and took his Nokia 6210 valued at P12,000, that had been a gift from his wife.

Salmorin was able to describe his assailants and the clothes they wore to his wife at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital before he died, she told the court.

"There can be no doubt that the utterances of Michael given at the very moment that he was fighting for his life at the hospital are admissible as a dying declaration," Chiongson said.

The police told the court that Yanson is a hard-boiled criminal who is a known cell phone thief, who goes in and out of the Bacolod City Jail. He also had a previous conviction for drugs.*CPG
