may i please add a contradictory opinion... I'm NOT IN FAVOR of those making extra left-turn lanes BUT IN FAVOR of those entering the intersection to make a left turn before the "left turn go" light turns green. here goes...

sa ibang bansa po kasi (like Singapore and the US of A) pinapayagan yung papasok ka na sa loob ng intersection and wait there before the "left turn go" light turns green. in other countries also, they have a "yield rule" wherein there is no "left turn go" light but only a single "go" green light for both through traffic (yun mga diretso ang punta) and also for those turning left (or right if it were a right hand drive country like singapore). pag clear ang on-coming traffic then those inside the intersection waiting to turn left can turn left, even if there is no "left turn go" signal. or they can turn left when the traffic light changes. this is the idea of those drivers entering the intersection even before the light turns green for left turn, to save time (as in "reaction time") and believe it or not, SPACE, especially since the left turn lane most of the time is only a short length enough only for a few vehicles. legal po ito sa ibang countries. sa pilipinas they painted the intersection with an X and they post "keep intersection open" signs, but this does not maximize the road space. in other countries where they have better traffic management, this is one way they maximize their road space and improve reaction time, by allowing vehicles to enter the intersection while waiting to make a left turn (or right turn in a right hand drive road).

btw, reaction time is the time required for vehicles to start moving after a traffic light has changed.

i repeat, di po ako in favor sa "making extra lanes", in favor lang ako to entering the intersection before the "left turn go" light turns green, ON THE CONDITION OF COURSE THAT IT DOES NOT IMPEDE OR ENDANGER PEDESTRIANS IF THAT INTERSECTION HAS A PEDESTRIAN LANE.
