(UPDATE) COMPOSER Vehnee Saturno became the latest ‘carjacking’ victim Tuesday night after his Toyota Fortuner was forcibly taken by armed men, according to police.
The incident happened as authorities noted a spike in forcible car thefts in the weeks leading to Christmas.
He had just parked the vehicle in front of Metro Bar on West Avenue at 10:25pm when the thieves appeared and commandeer the vehicle, said a desk officer in the Quezon City police anti-carnapping unit (ANCAR).
They took Saturno along at gunpoint and dropped him off somewhere in Marilao, Bulacan. From there, Saturno took a cab and reported the incident to the Baler police station which turned over the case to ANCAR.
It was the fifth incident of forcible car theft this month and the 15th since September, based on ANCAR figures. In contrast, there was only one such case in August, and none in June and July, the figures showed.
Parked car thefts, or cases not involving violence, 15 cases were recorded this month, 14 in October, seven in September, and 17 in August.
The records do not include motorcycle thefts.
According to the police, Saturno had just parked his vehicle and was on his way to the bar when he turned back, apparently having left something in the car.
Just then, the gun-wielding thieves appeared, commandeered the SUV, and forced Saturno inside, police said.
The thieves sped away and dropped the composer off in an unspecified location in Marilao, Bulacan, according to a report by ANCAR investigator Police Officer 1 Hector Rarugal.
An ANCAR desk officer said Saturno hailed a cab, which took him to the Baler Police Station where he reported the incident. The case was later turned over to ANCAR.
The ANCAR officer said forced car thefts traditionally rise around the Christmas season.

Marami kasi ang naulol sa pagbili ng high-profile na Fortuner kaya logical na sila ang flavor of the month these days....
