Carjackers steal van, give driver transpo fare
MANILA, Philippines – Carjackers stole a van in Quezon City Thursday night but made sure the family driver had enough money to get home.
Driver Rodolfo Elpos said he was parking the white gold Toyota Super Grandia along Esteban Abad street in Barangay Loyola around 9 p.m. when one of the carjackers poked a gun at him. “Pagbukas ko ng sasakyan biglang may bumukas sa kabila at tinutukan ako ng baril. Pinadapa na ako dun. Papatayin daw ako pag ako’y gumalaw,” he said.
Elpos said 3 carjackers drove the van with him still inside. He said he heard the carjackers talking to someone via cellphone about another carjacking that was happening simultaneously. "Sabi may kinacarjack silang CRV at pumapalag yung babae," he said.
Elpos said he also heard the carjackers say they would drop him off in Calamba. He thought they would drive all the way to Calamba, Laguna but he was dropped off near Calamba Street in Quezon City.
Before leaving, the carjackers gave Elpos money for transportation.
The vehicle's owner, Minette Padilla, said she bought the van last month. Authorities have conducted a follow-up operation on the incident.
Superintendent Ferdinand Vilanueva of Quezon City Police Districty (QCPD) said authorities in NLEX, SLEX and ports have been advised of the stolen vehicle. Villanueva added that authorities will check whether there was a surveillance camera around the area where the vehicle was stolen.
Last August 12, Quezon City police arrested four suspected carjackers believed to be members of the notorious Marteja-Briones group.
Meanwhile, two suspected carjackers were killed in a shootout by authorities last August 10 in Makati City. – Reports from Jeck Batallones, ABS-CBN News; and Jon Ibañez, dzMM
