For Japanese car enthusiasts and tuners, it's usually much quicker and easier to refer to cars by their chassis codes (FD, FC for the Mazda RX-7s) instead of saying "1991-1998 Mazda RX-7" or "third-generation Mazda RX-7."
"FD" also happens to be the chassis code for the most recent Honda Civic. Civics used to have chassis codes that started with "E" (e.g. EF, EG, EK, ES denoting successively newer Civic chassis from 1988-2005) but Honda ran out of two-letter combinations, so they started using "F"
It's the same thing with BMWs, although it's a little less straightforward. Chassis codes for BMWs are made up of "E" and two numerals, e.g. "E46" refers to the previous-generation 3-series. Starting 2009, they'll be using "F" as well because they ran out of "E" combinations
