Local parts makers launch One-Brand project (Manila Times 9-28-07)

Local auto parts makers comprising the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) recently launched a project called the One-Brand Project, in which MVPMAP members will pool their resources together to collectively market and sell their nonproprietary products under a common brand name to supply not only the local auto market but also the export market.

On the quality aspect, the end-users are assured that that they will get the same product quality for the products they buy as those supplied by MVPMAP members to the original equipment market or the car and truck assemblers.

The One-Brand Project is meant to cushion the impact of reduced production volumes during the last few years due to negative market factors. The Philippines still continues to import auto spare parts for the replacement market, even those parts that can be locally assembled.

The result is that most of our members are currently operating at only 40 percent of their rated plant capacities. Even worse, some have closed shops. Thus, the number of local auto parts makers has been reduced from 250 companies 10 years ago to only about 175 companies today. Considering that there are over 50,000 workers dependent on the local auto parts making industry, we have to do something fast to save the industry. We hope that this One-Brand Project, which will complement our own Philippine Utility Vehicle project, will provide the impetus for a revived market that will save 50,000 jobs,” Lee said.

I hope they do this right. Up the quality, while keeping the price competetive.

Heck, if we can't produce automobiles, we could do at least what taiwan did - manufacture spare parts.

Definitely agree. But hopefully we can have one in the near future. We can start with the PHUV.

Just curious as to how they will implement quality control. Will each company be responsible for its own product? Will there be any distinction between a product made by Company A and one made by Company B? If there is none, then a substandard product made by one company will invariably affect the entire brand.

Also, will there be standard pricing? Or will the companies be allowed to undercut each other? And end-up with insufficient margins?

Personally, I feel it would be better if well-defined product specifications, including quality standards, are established by MVPMAP, which should also handle sales and distribution, in addition to the announced marketing campaigns. Then all the manufacturers can submit/supply their products to MVPMAP or an umbrella organization it sets-up specifically for these functions.

Of course, the inherent problem with such a set-up is when manufacturing capacity exceeds demand and the members end-up competing for market shares among themselves, given that they are all supplying the same products. Unfortunately this will likely be the initial scenario, given that most of the members are operating at only 40% of capacity and brand recognition still needs to be established.

But if the members can sacrifice short-term gains and adhere to quotas set by MVPMAP and aim for long-term progress, then they just might be able to pull it off. Hopefully this will be the case.

--For me its a "Big STEP" to the right direction. Its high time that Pinoy manufacturers of autoparts should be given a market in their own turf.

--We've been exporting autoparts already to the US, Japan etc. And yet here in the Philippines local autoparts have not given any recognition nor a chance to thrive.

--perception issues kasi. Kesyo mahina "local" whereas local means pala ay Taiwan or Chinese made.

--I have tried locally made parts already. Goodyear for tires, Rota wheels for magwheels. Roberts radiators and leaf spring, Fujitsu for car stereos. Pertua for my additives. Marami pa.

--Hirap lang kasi sa Pinas, parang generic drugs or milk products, na-condition tayo ng mga vested interests (sino pa e di ang mga mababait na CAMPI members at importers who are willing to destroy our local industries for profit) na imported is good.

--I hope MVPMAP will seriously pursue this laudible program so that we can break the monopoly of foreign autoparts markers, their local minions a.k.a importers.

--Wala e kung lagi tayong nakaasa sa imports o imported na spare parts tayo rin ang mayayari in the near future. Bakit?unsustainable kasi. We are just making ourselves willing victims and hostages of these foreign oligopolists e.

--Captive market tayo. Can we dictate the prices of autoparts?A big NO. Can we force them to bring in autoparts that are suitable for our climate and road conditions. HINdi.

--We should stop that nonsense na all imported are good. We also need to remember that in a our Philippine capitalist system, Car companies here have created an oligopoly. NO CHOICE E.

--MVPMAP, if you are patriots, make this program happen and succeed. kasi unang-una kayo ang makikinabang. make sure you are going to give us more and better quality goods.

--Masarap bumili ng GAWA SA PINAS KASI KADA BILI MO MAY ISANG PINOY ANG MABIBIGYAN MO NG TRABAHO AT PAGKAIN SA LA MESA.

--Indirectly, you are helping the government in limiting crime (economic crime) and maintaining peace and order in our country.Kasi mbawasan tambay sa bahay.

--Maraming gutom sa PInas kasi pinapatay ng foreigners, ng mga corrupt na opisyal ng gobyerno at mga walang pakialam na pinoy ang mga nanghihingalong industriya natin.

--MVPMAP I hope this is not a lip service because I always believe that a "truly vibrant local auto industry and autoparts industry will make us PInoy auto consumers more power to choose and liberate ourselves from the abuse (price control and manipulation of BIG auto corporations) of global manufacturers.

YES! I hope this really works well! Im really proud of our locally made parts and I hope that this will really help in their marketing.

Some problems which may be encountered though is the "palakasan" system prevalent in our culture.

The "palakasan" system may destroy the MVPMAP's quality control system. When more than 1 manufacturer is available for a similar product, [e.g. Tires: goodyear vs yokohama, Rims: ROTA vs. Silverwind vs. Walter Wolf (there are around 7 actually)], the manufacturer which may be chosen to supply that "One Brand" particular may not be the one which has the best quality and/or price, but might be the one closest to the association president.

Also, pusuits of many associations suddenly die out when the president changes because the new president does not want to continue ideas which are not his own...

These problems is prevalent in many Filipino organizations, not just the government. Let's hope that MVPMAP will not suffer from these. They will need a lot of our support and prayers to do so.
