April 20th, 2003 06:19 PM #61mbt,
Yup, bakit hindi? Done properly ang heel-toe, less strain on the engine since hindi siya nabibigla.
Downshifting from 5th to 3rd to overtake a pesky slow-driver on a 2-lane road ok mag double declutch para hindi rin aalog yung makina once you floor it again.

Ingat sa mga sweet talk ng mga sales person, mga bolero yan. They will even insist na mag pa insured ka sa kanila. Normally kasi cheapipay ang in house insurance, although convenient dahil sila mag aayos, pero ako always sa labas ang insurance kasi pag seryoso na ang damages like bodily injury and property damage mas malaki ang naclclaim sa insurance sa labas.
Always insists a test drive not just a test ride

A little clarification, i went to GM Autoworld in Makati BTW.
Try to research a lot on the service-friendly CASA shops since there is a world of difference between the sales and service people IMO. the sales of course want to sell you the car, they may be very helpful and kind but they usually dont stay around too long in one dealership (sales has a high turnover rate).
The service people are a big difference and i've encountered a lot of !*#$#%#%# service people.. maswerte nalang ako that in know a little bit on cars so i dont bite their recommendations right away (it never hurts to get a second opinion)... i feel sorry for those who dont have the time to get a second opinion or look for cheaper parts outside so they end up spending twice or thrice as much then usual due to wrong/false diagnosis (take note, this could be intentional on the service people's part).
On insurance, take one from outside the dealership from a reputable company like Malayan, Philam, Prudential, etc... you may pay a little more but you can get better services when the time to claim does arise. It's also advisable to try to scout out the comprehensive insurance rates for the cars that you plan to get.... (i'm still pushing/suggesting a '99-'00 Toyota Corolla Gli kung second hand... hehe :P). The sales person/people in the dealership also gets a cut from insurance if he sells you the in-house insurance so be ready to be barraged by offers from them as well (just politely tell them that you already have a old friend-insurance agent).

If you really want something easy to drive, consider an SXA10 (97-99) RAV4 2 door with AT. Its terribly easy to park, The engine produces 138horses, Squeezes 7.5Km to the Liter, Has ample ground clearance, the grip of fulltime 4WD, cutesy looks AND costs 400k lang!

Well, the main advantage of a new car as the others mentioned is that you basically dont have to worry about repairs outside of the every 5000km maintainance for around 3 years or so.
If you get a second hand, try to keep to the ones that are still fairly new so that you can avoid some probable repairs along the way (although do expect some repairs to be done if you get a second hand)... As much as possible, try to avoid the second hand car dealers and "buy and sell" guys. From experience, they usually tamper the odo and hide some defects here and there (i once looked at a car that looks really new but when i looked for the orginal owner, i found out the mileage had been spun down from 56K to 23K 8O ). Always look for the service records and have the car lifted in a gas station then checked by a trusted mechanic or friend, you can find a lot of info on how the car was used by doing this (tires, udercarriage/chassis dents, suspension problems, engine/tranny leaks, etc....)
Owning a car is a never-ending process IMO.... Thats why its really helpful to ask a lot and get second opinion from other peeps to help in deciding from a car purchase to repairs.
