Due to Federal regulations, 70's and 80's USDM cars had speedos that only went to 85mph. Of course a lot of cars could easily break 100mph. The speedo just goes to the end of its travel.

not true to all i guess. i had a mid 80s celica GT whose speedo went over 100mph, i believe till 110-120. im sure a lot of other USDM cars do too.

I don't know when they went over 85 again. Anyways, it was just another one of those 'bright' government ideas during the fuel crisis. Along with the 55mph speed limit and emphasizing the '55' on speedometers. Our '81 USDM Benz is saddled with the ugly 85mph speedo.

That limit was gone by 1986 when I bought a Nissan Pulsar NX. It had a 125 mph speedometer even though it only had 69(?) hp. It could also do 105 mph although it took a very long time.

Yep, the needle stays right on the highest number.

We were driving through France to get to Paris during our 2 week Euro Trip. we rented a van..we were going 140kph..n that was the limit. A French bastard cop pulled us over n we were wondering why because other cars were passing us n we were going 140. He said we were going 160kph..we told him impossible! because our limit is 140kph..either we were going over 160kph (which i believe is why) or our License Plate contained the letter "I" on the far left...or right? which stands for "Italy..." where we rented our van... ne ways, we had to follow him to the highway police station n we ended up paying the guy off. I guess some things just dont change!
