if only budget can permit, i would like to have both but monetary considerations (not to mention the wifey directive to only have one toy) limits my choice to the swap!

September 2nd, 2003 08:16 AM #42I am sorry to inform you that a Muscle Car can be made to handle much cheaper than a BMW.
When the 1967 Stang was made the tires were BIAS ply and not the low profile radials. Changing the rear tires to 295/35 X 17 gives you a leap in handling. Changing the gear box to rack ang pinion and 245/40 X 17 front with tubular A arms are very easy.
Plus in 10 years the Stang will cost so much more than the BMW.
Don't get me wrong, I own German cars too. I rather that you take a ride on a car before you decide or speak out against it. At present, I am doing the Eleanor upgrade on a '68 fastback, with all the suspension upgrade. Parts are plentiful and engines are all around if you know your sources. The fastback is the base for the SHELBY production. A shelby will easily fetch $50,000.00 and the Fastback about $15,000.00, you cannot expect that from the BMW
The Mustang Fastback has been famous before you were born, the movie Bullit was on of them.

turbo, i respectfully disagree with some of your points:
while i agree that it is easy to upgrade a mustang in all aspects, the main drawback is the use of an active rear axle and its sheer weight. those two handling issues will never allow it to handle as nimbly as an m3 of any generation. changing the width of the tires will certainly increase grip but will also increase unsprung weight, making it more difficult to power out of corners, accelerate, etc.
the $50,000 for an "Eleanor" you quote is for an authentic SHELBY GT500 - the ones actually produced by Carroll Shelby with the 355 hp big block, uprated everything - essentially a gran sport race car from the factory. you won't get 50k from a conversion, much like you wouldn't get $15k for a 325i with m3 parts.
it's debatable what an e30 m3 will go for over the long term -right now units in good condition go for about $12-16k. i do agree with you that the mustang will probably prove to be the better investment - but that's not why we buy cars, right?
please don't take this post as a slam against the mustang - i love this car too. but i simply felt the need to reiterate the fact that each car has DISTINCT advantages over the other - that's why the decision is such a hard one to make

September 4th, 2003 12:57 PM #48just saw on cable this movie by cameron crowe starring tom cruise and cameron diaz. can't even remember the title (it's that forgettable) but can remember the car tom cruise drives... a fastback. the mustang was better looking than the driver and if i only have the resources to get one like that...you'll appreciate it better once you bequeath it to your grown-up son (why do you think smb used a mustang in it's "idolo" ad?)

September 4th, 2003 10:55 PM #49I have a 68 Fastback that I ressurected from the junkyard. It is presently being converted to an "ELEANOR" from the Nicholas Cage version of the Gone in 60 Seconds. I had the nose and the light buckets extended to 4". The rear end was redone with a pair of 67 Cougar tail light and a Shelby spoiler. The body conversion is just about finished. The rest of the body is being primered. I will shove a 302 or a 429 depending on my mood. I now I can get a 429 from an abandoned Ford fire truck. You can visit me in Bocaue to see the rest of my other cars.
I was born in 1960, that is why I am biased toward the Mustang. I grew up and experienced the reign of the mighty V8's. My father owned a 68 350 Malibu and I was given a 67 Cougar for my first car(at the age of 17) while my uncle drives a 69 Mach 1. Those where the years(1977-1980) when gas was 1.25 pesos only. It is only in 1996 that as an earning man that I started to buy the cars that I love. The cars that are only a dream in my youth can be had with the right timing of car availability and doe.Last edited by turbo; September 4th, 2003 at 10:59 PM.
