From what I know, all production cars/engines were made to run on the most available gasoline in all gasoline station, such as in the Philippines, the most common now is the unleaded gasoline. The oil companies here created a premium brand of their own, adding more octane rating and some claim adding more additives to improve burning, speed, these added additives are not free, so they hiked the price compared to the ordinary unleaded gasoline, so you pay more with more additive. With premium brand, companies generate more profit compared to the ordinary unleaded, the additive they add is not proportional to the amount you pay for these added benefit.

Check the owner's manual of the Escape, the type of fuel used by the vehicle should be listed there.

For example for the Ford Focus it says Unleaded Fuel, Minimum 95 octane.

New fuel injected engines are usually E10 capable, the latest 2010 Escape has even been upgraded to accept E20 (if it ever becomes available in local gas stations).

unleaded or premium for ford escape
