Can't say there aren't few issues with the FD, but most of them probably are NOT drivetrain related (i.e. lower chance of getting stranded)

Game of chance lang naman ito. Which type of car is more likely to leave you stranded? Hehehe

Kumbaga, talagang Civic or Corolla na lang best choices no? Considering the budget?

May mga dapat ba akong iwasang year nung dalawa? Or wala naman?

We're planning on getting a second hand 2008-2010 Ford Focus Hatchback.

Reading this thread, I am now hesitant. Please enlighten me.
My friend drives a focus around that age (Z plate), sobrang sakit ng ulo. Hindi siya nawawalan ng kwento sa mga problema ng focus He stopped using the focus and drove their older civic instead (X plate)

It depends on the engine and tranny option for the Focus. Those models with MT trannies are not as problematic as those with the Powershift DCT tranny. The gas models with the traditional AT tranny are less worrisome also. For those Focus with Powershift DCT trannies, a few did have catastrophic tranny failures but a lot of them are still running on the road. From a maintenance perspective, it just happens that only a few local mechanics are well-schooled in fixing DCT trannies since it is not a common option for Asian cars. DCT or DSG is more common with Euro cars. As we all know, Ford cars are designed in Europe while their SUVs and trucks are designed in the US or Australia.

If you prefer MT and a diesel, a Focus TDCI MT is a good bargain for used car buyers.

Now, if you prefer something Japanese, you can never go wrong with a Civic or Altis. They are still not free of issues (like the engine support issue with the Civic FD) but the ease of maintenance is a plus for them. If you want something cheaper, a Sentra N16 or Mazda3 will be worth considering since their resale value is lower than the Civic or Altis.

As the owner of an 11 year old FD 1.8 AT that is still seeing use 3-7 days a week:
    Repair history namin:
    1. Engine Support (1 of the 3) die every 3-4 years.
    2. Starter motor rebuilt
    3. Rear Wheel bearing replaced
    4. Front shock absorbers replaced
    5. Power steering high pressure hoses replaced
    6. AC Pulley making a weird sound at present -- sabi ni speedyfix hindi pa raw kailangan palitan until the AC loses its temperature
    7. Window motors needed a little fixing
Recommendations for FDs will be in this order assuming automatic hanap mo: 2.0S-L 2007-2008 OR 1.8S 2009-2012, 2.0S 2009-2012, 1.8S 2006-2008

For a Corolla of the same age:
1.6L ZZ engine tends to sludge up.
You may want to find a 1ZR engine (Corolla 10th gen facelift) 1.6G/V
    Recommendations: 2009-2011 1.6V / 2.0, 2007-2008 1.8V (medyo rare), all others
Get the V variant if maliit yung price diff vs the G variants

Mukhang discouraged na ako sa Focus, since parang MT/Diesel combo lang yung matino.

With regards to Mazda3, saw somewhere na, masyado raw siya mabigat for its engine, kaya hirap masyado engine so malakas sa gasolina?

Yung Focus 2.0L gas 2006-2008 with traditional AT tranny oks din naman yun. Its platform is shared with the Mazda3 and Volvo C30 since during those times, Mazda and Volvo were owned by Ford.

So a Mazda 3 2009 Hatchback, would be a good car?
