MEN who are 40 years old and over who suddenly lose cravings for *** could be suffering from andropause, the counterpart of menopause.

Andropause, or male menopause, is not a disease but a stage in men's life as they age that occurs when the testes partially or no longer secrete testosterone -- usually after the age of 40.

It is usually characterized by diminished libido, inability to get an erection, difficulty achieving and experiencing an orgasm, tempered *** drive, always feeling tired, no energy, depressed mood, and diminished muscle strength.

"The ***ual behavior (of men) is testosterone dependent. And low testosterone level greatly affects the way of life and ***ual activities of men," said Dr. Jose Albert Reyes, president of the Philippine Society of the Study on Aging Males (PhiSSAM).

In some cases, menopause in men may be due to trauma, cancer or congenital reasons.

Reyes said that while andropause is similar to women's menopause, there is no clear cut signs for the cessation of testosterone production in men, making andropause difficult to diagnose among Filipino men. In contrast, menstruation stops when women have menopause.

"Even if they experience signs and symptoms of andropause they don't seek medical help because of timidity and stigma," he said. "They do not go voluntarily to see their doctor. They come only when they have serious or irreversible condition such as heart attack or a cancer that has spread," he said.

"We have to see more and more patients to see the extent of the andropause in men," Reyes said.

One effective way to treat the symptoms of andropause, is through testosterone replacement, said Reyes, chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. Treatments range from weekly injections of medicine to transdermal patch, gel and oral medication.

Recently, a drug company introduced a convenient life-long treatment, testosterone undecanoate, which is administered through vaccination every three months.
