    any old school mechanic will tell you to take it easy on the first 1000 km.

    "taking it easy" means not driving it at constant revs for prolonged periods of time. you need it vary it. 2000rpm for a few minutes , 2500 rpm the next etc, etc.

    the engine is built to certain tolerances but the parts are not to an exact fit. the moving parts will need to "grind" into each other for the first few hundred km to find its proper fit.

    a properly "broken-in" vehicle will mean you will have a vehicle that will not need an overhaul for a longer period of time. this means if you a "keeper" vehicle, something you expepct to own for over 100,000 km, it will be better to break-in the car gently in the first 1000km.

    in summary, if you "race" your car during the first 1000km, it will not break down now. but expect to need to overhaul it earlier than a properly broken in vehicle.

    The main enemies of a new engine are:

    1. too much heat
    2. too much load
    3. engine underload like too much idling.
    4. running the at low operating temperature.


    Too much heat and load will result to flashing of engine oil, glazing the cylinder wall. This will abnormally inhibit metal wear and mating of rings and the cylinder, adding the fact that these glazed areas are not distributed evenly over the cylinder wall the result is real bad compression seal.

    Items 3 & 4 will also result to glaze like deposits via oxidation of oil film not properly scraped away by underexpanded rings (by heat).
