Over-oiled will be obvious. Wet tignan. Dapat very light film talaga... then let it dry out a bit before using it.

Power increase will depend on the car and the filter. Some cars gain nothing with cones, which means drop-in lang talaga (about 1-3 hp only, though). Some cars like cones. Some cars will run like crap with a cone if you simply attach the cone to the stock MAF... and require you to add a tube.
Some cars, if you simply add a tube, you will lose power in some spots because the resonator chambers on the stock intake actually provide power.
Some cars either blow up (Subarus) or throw check-engine lights with the wrong intake (Mazdaspeed3 and 6, with the Mazda-branded CAI in the US).
My car makes 5 hp more with a long tube intake versus a short tube intake. And with the long tube, it makes as much power as a CAI, even without the cold air part.

tl:dr - if you want to make power with a filter, research, research, research to find the best option for your car.

Chicks, 25,000kms old yung filter ko. Had it since the car was 1,000kms old. I inspect it every 10,000kms and clean if necessary.
Depends also how restrictive the stock airbox is. If it's anything like the Corolla Altis 1.6L, there wasn't much difference with the short ram on my 2007 Altis for the daily drive (FC and performance wise).

any other tsikoteer inputs?
so far, from other forum members experience, wala pa ako nababasa na nacontaminate maf sensor nila from k&n filters.
i think from those others who complain that their maf sensor is damaged, overoiling ang nagawa nila.
might be getting one. hehe.
extra throttle response from my econo box.

When I added my cone system, the most noticeable difference for me was hearing the filter suck air. I felt a little more pep from the engine too but I don't think it was something to rave about. I am impressed though that the filter still works. In the long run, it saved me money plus adds a little more eye candy in the engine bay when you lift the bonnet.

October 10th, 2013 05:04 PM #218K&N drop-in filter user here, 2.5L DiD non-VGT. No issue yet whatsoever. Just acceleration goodness.
Just make sure you buy the genuine. There are news circulating in the past that there are counterfeits.
Got mine from US. Even sold some in the *past*.
As for the MAF, you should maintain this part as well. Because even running on OEM filter, it will eventually fail or degrade that it will affect your FC and could even cause surging at some point.
Here're some info from K&N itself.
The first 3 URLs are MAF related. The last is all about the K&N filter in general.

Got this from speedlab last weekend
compared with the stock replacement paper air filter
Good better acceleration from a full stop. ayus for stop and go traffic,
and anything else i think parehas lang, kahit induction noise, tunog stock padin,
thou hindi ko pa binibirit, tipid ako sa gas eh. hehe. ill post updates pag nalabas ko
sa mahaba habang highway.
the fact na i dont have to press deeper sa accelerator sa rush hour traffic
masaya na ako. hehe..
