I have a 19 year old Lancer which I have kept for sentimental reasons. I installed a K&N filter on this Lancer a month after I bought it. It is a cone filter and is not one of the drop-in filters. It currently is still using the same K&N air filter up to today with no problems from the engine. I have only recharged this air filter four times in its lifetime and I do so every 20,000 kms as advised to me. (As advertised, these filters are supposed to be good for 50,000 miles before cleaning is required but that's for countries with less pollution than ours I guess). I remember being told back in the day that K&N filters work even better when they are dirty as the dirt acts as a filter for the filter. This car is running well and purring like a kitty.
I think the problem with oil getting into the MAF sensor is when you over oil your filter. I don't think the filter is supposed to be reddish in colour all the time but I usually hear of people cleaning their K&N filters as soon as it gets a little dirty.

pagkapoba nilagyanko ng ganito ung 1.3 na vios, bukod sa HP gain, titipid po ba sa gas?
currently 14.5KPL po ako, kung magiging 16~18KPL man lang ako kukuha na po ako nito. heheh

I wonder, would there be some real world benefit of slapping on an open type K&N short ram style on a 2.0L VVTi automatic Innova?

Very minimal. I have the K&N drop in on the same car.

You clean yours every 25000kms? Hehe ako dati kada 10k lang kasi nga masyadong marumi hangin sa atin. :bwahaha: Also because I have experienced a drop in my fuel economy and it went back to normal after I cleaned the filter. Now though, after 13k kms, my FC is still the same, kaya di ko pa nililinis ulit. As for the MAF issues, no problems at all after around 25k++ kms. and yes, just don't over oil the filter.
Edit:
Also do note that you're supposed to put oil on the "dirty" side of the filter ONLY. Yung inner part or yung papunta sa MAF/intake manifold ay di dapat lagyan ng oil.

For me, it's not oil residue. The residue is a fine film of oily dust. But that's after going a hell of a lot of kilometers (60k plus). I guess I should have recharged earlier.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
