Try using a higher octane fuel... see if it eliminates the engine knock or tope. Usually older cars require higher RONs.

Try mong magpakarga ng same fuel sa ibang gas stations (preferably newly opened ones and not located in flood prone areas), kung di umubra, try higher octane gas. Also, nung nagtune up ka, nagcheck ba ng valve clearance?

di po ako sigurado kung na-check yung valve clearance eh..ermat ko nagdala ng auto sa mechanic.. pano po ba ginagawa yun? is it as simple as checking/turning some screws o kailangan buksan makina to check/adjust valve clearance?

The EL should be able to take regular 93 octane AFAIK. As the others mentioned, try gassing up at good station (Caltex, Petron, Shell)...
Mura lang magpa-check ng IGNITION timing. Just look for a service station/mechanic with a timing light and make sure he knows what the stock setting of the Lancer is. If it still persists, then you try upping to 95 octane fuel.
TO check valve clearances, they open up the engine but this shouldnt result in detonation/tope really. Valve clearances that are off-spec usually results in more enging clatter, not "tope".

IIRC they're with AVID. The reported numbers in the TG article are from CAMPI.
