Hi guys, I just wanna know kung anong best oil level for old diesel engines? I have an '85 Benz 300sd which has about 100,000 kms. on its odometer, have'nt been overhauled nor calibrated. It does'nt consume oil but has oil leaks on some parts of the engine but still very minimal. I was told that 3/4 or 1/2 on the dip stick level is best for old diesel engines, is this true?
I was told also that a single grade motor oil is good enough since we don't have a cool climate in the philippines.

Single grade diesel oils in the Phil have very low additive packages thus low API ratings. Would be safer to use a multi-grade, ie, 15w40 which have higher API ratings- CF4, CG4. Does your engine have a turbo?

jackaroo, I'll use a multi-grade oil since I would be getting more protection pala.......Yep, my 300sd is turbo charged kaya more expensive when overhauling time comes. I guess matagal pa yon since the engine does'nt consume oil naman.
boybi, will maintaining the oil level at 3/4 of the dipstick level cause any engine problems in the future?

W126 ba 300SD mo? Hehehe. Sarap niyan kahit medyo mabagal. Ganyan ginagamit ng mother ko, eh. Year 2k3 na pero hindi pa din naluluma.

Between MIN and MAX on the dipstick is usually the best. Kasi kapag sobra may tendency magka-leaks. Kapag mababa naman, maingay engine.

    Btw, we use DELO 500/GOLD

Otep, It's an 85' w126. It sure does'nt feel or look old for an 18 year old car, in fact I just had it repainted cause the original paint is already starting to fade, no rust on any body panels.
It really is sluggish on initial take-offs pero once you get going it can chase any other diesel vehicles around. I've was able to take it to 140 kph, for an '85 model car it really is something.
By the way, we have a lot along congressional ave. in tierra pura, where do you usually do your off roading ba?

Tama 126 nga pala yung 300SD. 230E pala yung W124. Sa father ko naman yun. Hehehe. Ok itong mga Benz. Kahit luma na japorms pa din. And best of all, hindi ganoon kamahal unlike Japanese cars. Sige edit ko na other post ko. Salamat.

We off-road doon sa construction ng Congressional between Mira-Nila and Tierra Pura. Near Tierra Verde ata yun. Basta doon. hehehe.
