sir ask ko lang po kung bakit naging hard starting yung kotse po namin..4d55 po yung engine ko,,tapos kailangan po namin siya i heat kahit po uminit na yung makina like when i stop for about 10mins hindi na po siya iistart kailangan po ulit siya i heat to start the engine tapos yung usok po masakit sa mata tapos mabaho po yung usok not like the usual smell of the exhaust tapos kapag binunot po yung dipstick may tumatapon na langis

there are 3 things needed for an engine to start. air, fuel and source of ignition. sa gasoline engine those 3 are air and gasoline (either by carburation or injection) at the right a/f ratio, and spark from the ignition system. sa diesel engine, those 3 are air, diesel injected into the cylinder, and heat of compression (another name for a diesel engine is compression ignition engine).

as you said it needed the use of the heater plugs every time you start your engine. i am sure there is air and diesel since nag-start naman sya. but the source of ignition e pumapalya. sabi mo pa may tumatalsik na langis sa dipstick, at mausok na ang exhaust. isa na lang yan, loose compression na yan. overhaul para minsanan ang gastos, or pag wala ka pa budget padukot* mo na lang ang piston rings. yun lang nga sa "dukot", warning lang na kung sobra na ang wear sa cylinders e baka baliin lang yung new piston rings na ilalagay mo. temporary fix lang yan at di rin tatagal, good for 6-12 months lalo na kung sobra na ang wear sa cylinders, or even less kung kumakalembang na ang piston. you can actually hear sound like bells ringing inside the engine if the piston and cylinder wear is way over the limits. an experienced mechanic will tell you right away that you need nothing less than an overhaul when he hears bells ringing because definitely that engine will fail a compression test.

*"dukot" is the neighborhood mechanic's term for replacing the piston rings without removing the cylinder head. it involves dropping the oil pan, then removing the piston and connecting rod assembly from under the engine block. the pistons are then dressed with new rings after which the assemblies are installed back the way they came out. punta ka sa mga mekaniko ng jeepneys and taxis, experts sila dyan sa "dukot".

Replace the glow plugs. When one or two are bad, fuel is not burnt properly, hence the smoke that comes out at start up. If it's blue smoke, you're also burning oil, but if it's black, it's just unburnt fuel likely meaning glow plug replacement lang yan.

Kung tumatapon yung langis check mo kung overfilled yung oil. Kung oo, it might lead to excessive pressure on the seals and gaskets, that can lead to premature loss of compression like Yebo said.

What was to behaviour of the engine prior to the hard starting?
    Overheating?
    nanginginig yung makina?
    maingay? where?
    May langis na tambucho?

Sir Yebo, question lang po. Hindi po ba mahirap maglabas ng piston without removing the cylinder head? I thought you can only pull the piston from the upper end of the block. Thank you sir!

    Check the following:

    1. Glow Plugs
    2. Starter
    3. Battery
    4. Electronics

    In that order.

    Hope that helps.

check glow plug muna then palit kung patay na ang ilan, battery check, starter at oil level, Kapag lahat at ganun pa rin then punta ka sa na compression test. From there malalaman kung kailangan ng overhaul…btw ilan na mileage? Any leaks?

actually sa diesel engine if the compression is good, timing is good, starter is good, the engine is not too cold, it will start even without glow plugs. unlike sa gasoline kailangan ng spark to effect the combustion kaya may spark plug.
