This quite an old thread already but one of the things to note here is the risk of doing ' DUKOT' which was adequately describe here.

In a worn engine bore, there in the top end portion of the cylinder is a raised area (compared to the portion of the cylinder below it) called the 'RIDGE'.

The diameter of the cylinder in this area retains it original dimension (it is narrower) because the top compression ring does not reach this area as the piston travels to the TOP DEAD CENTER and so it is not worn.

When you try to remove the piston through the top end of the cylinder the lower edge of the 'ridge' will block the passage of the piston rings, you will have to remove the 'ridge' if you will get the piston out this way.

When you do 'DUKOT' there is a real big risk of the top piston rings in there unworn dimension will hit the ridge with a big force, leaving you a broken piston rings.

Now there are ring sets where the top rings have beveled surface to prevent hitting the ridge, but certified mechanics doesnt really advice to resort to this as they are known to have a poor compression pressure or blow-by sealing.

The thing to do is rebore and fit an oversized pistons/rings or install standard cylinder lining with standard pistons and rings.

To a diesel engine installing an oversized piston/rings is a technique to increase the cylinder capacity and power output of an engine without necessarily resulting to increased fuel consumption because the amount of fuel injected remains the same and fuel is injected only when the air is already compressed.

In gasoline the air/fuel mix is kept around the lambda and enters the cylinder at the same time so using oversized piston/rings will result to increased fuel consumption.
