Hi guys! I have been monitoring an engine leak for around 6months now; its at back of the engine.
    • The oil goes low to the middle of the F and L dots after 1month or so so thats when I top-up.
    • No smoke on the tail pipe
    • Spark plug burn is ok
    • Coolant level is fine
    • No oil in the radiator
    • Engine shifting is ok
    • NEVER had an overheat issue
    • Engine and A/C fans work great
    • Aircon is well maintained
I had my oil change last Monday, Oct 11. When the car was raised the the mechanic at Shell SM Sucat checked it and said it could be either the:
    • Cylinder head gasket = Php 622 (Price as per TM Pasong Tamo)
    • Valve cover gasket = Php 1,565 (Price as per TM Pasong Tamo)
My car's mileage reads 78,000kms only and change oil is every 5kms with Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 Semi-synthetic (BLUE). Got the car 2nd hand from my aunt who had the cars regular PMS at Toyota Makati.

I went to Toyota Pasong Tamo earlier and asked also the possible reasons for the oil leak. They also advised the same as above but the Service Advisor said that the CYLINDER HEAD GASKET angle might be slim at 78,000kms mileage and if the care never had an overheat issue since.

He said it is possible that its the VALVE COVER GASKET or an OIL SEAL...(I forgot what oil seal it was that he mentioned). Anyhow he said to have it checked just to make sure. Which I plan to do so when the budget is ready.

Since I still dont have the budget for this possible repair, my question is.......What harm will it bring the engine? Any tips? Advice?

I plan to have this fixed sometime December in time for the 80k PMS, when it reaches 82k kms.

Prior to this repair concern, I already planned to change oil every 2months or 3k kms mileage which ever comes first using Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 Semi-synthetic (BLUE).

    Thanks!

rear crankshaft oil seal ang malamang na sira.. possible din may leaking hose... ibaba ang buong transmission nyan for oil seal change

ganyan din ang ZZ namin. then the engine died due to sludge.

I would recommend na ipa-open mo ang engine cover para makilatis ng mabuti. If there is sludge, then it has to be removed. if none, then kampante ka.

got the same problem, but no leaks to be found, neither any oil consumption is detected. but mas mabagal lang magbawas ng oil yung sa akin, 1/4 lang ang nababawas kada 1 1/2 - 2 months. my engine is at 99.1k km.

will try to switch to a thicker 10w40 or 15w-40 oil on my next pms, then replace my VC gasket since i remedied it before with a silicon sealant.

no sludge yet, i assume.kakabukas ko lang ng top cover last few months.

Yes I think the TM Pasong Tamo mentioned it could be the crankshaft oil seal. I dont think it could be a hose as the leak is directly coming from the metal part of the engine. The hoses looked ok.

Sana oil seal nga lang. Will have it checked soon.

    What harm will this do?

Hehehe. Yeah I was following your 9th Gen Altis story. Wow hindi ako makatulog noon pre. Hehehe

Yes will have the engine opened by December for the 80k PMS. I dont think its a sludging issue.

after 1,000 km mula ng overhaul, change oil ako from mineral to semi synthetic. then change oil ulit after 4,000 km. next ay every 5,000 km using semi synthetic.

I see. Baka normal oil consumption lang ng engine at that mileage noh?

I thought you were using RP 10w-40 na?

Yup I saw your engine photo when it was opened. I hope mine is as clean also.

not normal for me. i think its that cheap 0w-40 ZIC FS oil i used that caused it. at 90k - 95k km.

before that, di naman nagbabawas ng oil.

now im using RP 10w30 from 95k km - present.

you can open the top cover DIY style anyways. madali lang naman.

and nagtataka din ako, wala naman leak sa crankshaft (kakababa lang ng tranny before, maybe at my 80k - 90k km, limut ko na). totally no signs of leaks.

sir... can you give us some pointers on how to open the top cover DIY? ano tools ang needed? kelangan din palitan ang gasket? i have an '04 1.6E pero wala namang apparent sign of engine oil loss... curious lang ako about sludging

What I saw in your posts kaya nag sludge yung sayo was when you extended the oil change interval to 10,000kms.

Sana ok results when you open the engine again nextime.

Since I was using FS oil, every 10,000 km ang palit. kaso hindi ako nagpapalit ng oil filter every 5,000 km. tuwing change oil lang.

Which caused the sludging issue for you? Did I get it right?

Kaya nga ako I will be changing my oil every 2months of 3k kms which ever comes 1st with Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 Semi-syn (Blue).

we got our ZZ 2nd hand. mula ng nakuha namin, nagbabawas na ito ng oil. casa maintaind naman ng 1st owner, i saw the records. ok naman. every 5,000 km palit ng oil filter tapos every 10,000 km palit ng oil. FS ang gamit mula ng 10,000 km PMS.

kung nasilip sana kaagad ang makina under the engine cover, naiwasan na tumirik ang makina.

we got the ZZ almost 3 years ago with around 78,XXX km sa odometer. bagong palit lahat ng fluids. kaso imbes na sa casa, total ang ginamit na products.

Same tayo, got it from my aunt 2nd hand also but maintained at TM Makati every 5k PMS.

Siguro the 10,000kms oil, 5,000kms oil filter change interval did your VVTi engine some harm. Dapat talaga change oil and oil filter every 5,000kms or earlier for the VVTi engines as per what I read in the internet ah.

a small bucket for the the bolts, and a 10mm socket wrench with extension.

and if you want, a sparkplug remover, to clean the plugs also or replace it.

if you have a torque wrench, it may be in use also. but dont know the required torque when the bolts is put back again.

Already had my Valve Cover Gasket replaced 2 weeks ago...medyo sira na nga and that was where the leak was coming from, that is as where we see the oil mess coming from.

Now I still see a little oil consumption on my dipstick. I'll have the oil mess on the rear of the engine cleaned with degreaser and monitor from then if there are other areas where the oil is coming from.

I went to Toyota Pasong Tamo earlier and got a qoute of 8k for labor if I have all the oil seals replaced. Plus 2k for parts I guess. the Service Advisor told me to just monitor where the oil is coming from before deciding to have all the oil seals replaced. But if budget is not an issue I could go ahead of course, he said.....he also told me that indeed oil consumption is normal as the mileage accumulates. Currently I am doing 97k kms already.

So far my spark plugs are not wet, morning white smoke on start-ups go away after a shortwhile....no burned oil odor coming from the tail pipe, no oil moisture yet as well.

So I guess the accumulating mileage is just catching-up. And normal wear and tear is taking is toll. But at least when I had the Valve Cover gasket replaced the camshafts and all are in great condition..NO SLUDGE!!!, though not as golden clean as aejhayl17's but very close, 90% as clean I guess....there is slight varnishing already but that is ok.
