Three minutes is too long. Get in. Start the car. Buckle up, adjust the mirrors, set the radio... the car is warm. Oil has now circulated up to the valvetrain and it's safe to go out.

Drive it out of the parking lot. Keep revs low until the temp gauge gets to 1/4th, then give it a little more. Then wait until you're up to operating temperature to use full revs.

Warming up in the parking lot takes a loooong time because the car isn't doing anything to warm itself up. It's like preparing for a basketball game by standing on the sidelines breathing heavily. Your engine is getting warm, but your gearbox oil, differential oil (on RWD cars) and brakes are still ice-cold.

Since the temperature gauge has no units, it's not as useful as old-school gauges that will give you approximate temperature.

But typically, middle or just below middle is normal.

I'm still sad that new cars don't have oil pressure gauges. Those were very useful.

binago ko na ritual ko sa starting from 3 minutes to just less 1 minute before moving the vehicle. yung oil pressure light and gage ang tinitignan ko as well as the vibration ng makina. kapag nagoff na yung pressure light tapos nagregister na sa pressure gage, i wait for the vibrations to settle down. then go. for the whole duration of the "ritual", hindi ko nirerebolusyon ang makina since turbodiesel sya.

    ok, back to topic.

Pero alalay lang until it reaches the normal operating temparature

i just wait for the oil indicator lamp to turn off, then i roll.
fortunately, my neighborhood does not allow for rapid car movement.. this allows the oil to circulate thruout the engine, before i can put in faster speed..
yes, i do miss all them dials, but today's cars have only idiot lights..

if your dad has driven that truck of his for 10 years and it hasn't broken down yet, bat ka naman paniniwalaan..? ... young know-it-all... heh heh.

kaya nga i rest my case na lang ang sagot sa kanya....tsaka isa pa e not regularly used yung truck nya. who knows kapag nadistrongka na for repair dun na magsilabasan ang mga issue due to starting habits.

The oil pressure idiot light, actually, is all you need to look at to know whether it's safe to move, already... but the temperature idiot light and gauge are what tell you if it's safe to rev.

    -

My perfect car would have only oil pressure, water temps, voltage, rpm and fuel on the primary cluster. Then I'd have a secondary display gauge for exhaust gas temps and wideband O2 sensor readings, right beside a mixture "lean" and "rich" dial.

Question po. I'm planning to buy 2nd hand na Ford Focus 2007 2.0 diesel. When I asked a mechanic, he said na iwas sa diesel cars kasi not good ang cooling system because maliit yung engine area so not much air and di elevated unlike pick-up and SUV. Additionally, city driving with bad traffic condition yung location ko. Pag umuwi ako ng gabi, 15 mins travel lang from office to house. Pag house to office during daytime, 30-40 mins tapos 2nd to 3rd gear lagi. Di ba advisable yung diesel hatch if ganito?
