    tsikoteers,

im using regular ngk plugs and castrol 15w-40 motor oil... if i change to iridium plugs and 10w-30 motor oil, would it improve my fuel consumption? i was thinking kasi maybe 5w-40 would be a bit to thin for a 10 year old car, or is it?

AFAIK motor oils contribute to better fuel mileage, do spark plugs have the same effect also? befor kasi i used bosch super four & to me it felt kinda "malakas sa gas" or is it just me?

    thanks!

sir, why use lower viscosity oils on older cars? i read somewhere it is not recommended but instead you should use 20W-50 for your engine. this provides better protection since your internals were well broken-in unlike to those newer models. anyways, haven't tried the spark plugs with iridium tips, its really expensive. they say, there are slight performance gain using iridiums, but then if you are trying to conserve then why buy components that are expensive enough and functions just the same?

if you want to conserve fuel then, try to change your driving habits / style.

we have a thread concerning fuel consumption, just feel free to search the website.

    cheers

stock components are made to maximize fuel economy.iridiums "daw" produces better performance....i doubt you'll ever feel it if you dont go racing.

and i had bad experiences with iridiums used by galants....

about the oil...use regular mineral oil lang lalo na sa older car.

From what I read Iridium Plugs can only improve mileage by about 1% at the most, this assumes that the engine is in tip top condition. Stock plugs would be best for a stock engine.

There are quite a number of engines that actually don't see any practical benefit from a change of plugs. If you're already using a certain style or brand, getting the top end version in platinum may help, but if you get a multi-point or fancy plug, your engine may or may not like it.

As for oil, 0 weight and 5 weight are not usually recommended for old engines because your clearances may already be too large and may let oil out. If you do choose to use these, be very careful. Trust me, this is from experience.

10w is a good compromise. I disagree with going to 20w, because it may make your engine feel a bit sluggish and un-eager to rev. Just check your oil consumption to make sure that your car isn't letting it past your piston rings. And since it's an old car and you should be following the 5000km interval religiously, it's better to use mineral oil, as you won't save any money using synthetic.

If you plan to go racing, it might be worth it to use synthetic, but from an economy point of view, no. I use sythetic on my old cars only because I run my engines very hard.

yeah, i heard it may be unwise to use a thin viscosity on older cars that's why i went 15w-40 and so far i haven't noticed any leaks or seepage. and yes, i do find the 20w a bit sluggish so i was just wondering if it would be pushing my luck if i went 10w.

oh well, having read your comments, i may just quit while i'm ahead and stick with 15w. as to the plugs, i may just go platinum.

    thanks guys!

    thanks again...

Yap tried the denso iridium for crv 1st gen. I got 6.3 from city driving. and for long trip highway the lastest I got is 9.1km/lt...the previous trip running at almost 120 to 160 kms from Manila to la union in just around 3hrs 40mins just got only 7.6kms/lt only..

Another tip.. if you really want to know how much you are consuming fuel..

Try starting to do a record.. list how much liters you purchased and the distance travelled then do the math..

km/L = total distance travelled divided by liters consumed..

This way you will know if you are reall y saving on your gas bills..

    Try it.. We do!

    Hope that helps!
