Air Intake Enhancements for Diesel Engines

Hey guys,

I am trying to squeeze more horsepower from my Isuzu Bighorn with 4JG2 intercooler turbo diesel engine. My first instinct is to change the stock air filter with less restrictive one, preferably that of K&N brand. I contacted speedlab*speedlab.com.ph, a local distributor of K&N air filter. Sad to say they don't have stock replacements anymore. However, they offer K&N open-type air filter with minor modifications in the air intake setup at P7,500.00. They claimed it could add more horsepower than that of stock air cleaner replacement. Is anybody among us here have tried Speedlab's air intake modifications. Comments for those who tried are very much welcome. Other modifications that could add more hp and fuel economy especially for 4JG2 engine will be very much appreciated.

to add more power to yuor existing engine is open up the intake and exhaust adding an aftermarket filter will make the engine ingest more air next yuo need to get larger diameter pipes for yuor exhaust system and use a free flowing muffler, if yuo have an intercooler try to clean it becuase years of use may have cause some oil to settle into it restricting the passages,,another form of adding horsepower is by chemical intercooling which we are distributing.it has been tested here and in the US..water/methanol injection..safer to use and less maintenance than a nitrous system..horsepower levels depends on the mixture..the price of each system dpnds on the application..for more info pm lng so i can explain it how the system works..

Medyo mahal yung pipes ng speedlab, but then, anything stainless is expensive nowadays, and their workmanship is good.

An open type K&N should net you about 4-5 hp and a bit more midrange torque, but the biggest gains from intake modification would be via your intercooler. Upgrading to a bigger front-mount should net you a 5-10 hp gain, even without exhaust modification.

If you know how to mess with your engine's fuel input and turbocharger boost control/wastegate mechanism, that's probably the surest way.

Got the same inputs from Auto_Xer/Ferman a year or two back. Have to replace the stock, basket-type, top-mounted intercooler with a larger front-mount intercooler. A friend in South Africa did the same to his version of our Isuzu Fuego, and was he raving about the benefits.

Yup. Top-mounts really don't cool efficiently, since the scoop isn't often designed properly, and, as pressure builds up in the engine bay, vent hot air out through the scoop at speed... negating any cooling effects.

O nga pala, sniffmydiff, have you tried scouting around for performance chips? Also, read on a different board about a spray. Forgot what it's composed of tho.

mag meth injection ka nalang, with or without intercooler, safe and efective way to add more power, less maintenance than a nitrous, the process is spraying a mist like mixture of water and methanol into yuor intake cooling the intake charge,water cools the air and methanol adds as an additonal fuel to burn adding more power and at the same time lowering yuor exhaust gas temperature making yuor turbo more effeicient.. weve tried and tested it on many turbo diesels from suvs , vans and trucks.. applicable sya for all turbo diesel.. 30-90 hp gains dpending on the mixture.. ..it can be switch on and off..it has its own boost sensor,pump and reservoir.

yup! we supply everything needed for the installation except for the mounting bracket that holds the pump and reservoir.. as for the electricals the safest is yuoll have an electrician install the switches and power output source in yuor ignition....

Meth injection? So, ibig sabihin, additional consumable to? Hindi ba mahal? More power, but less economical?

the cost of each system depends on the vehicle price range is from 35-40k, as per order po un ksi every vehicle has its own power range and psi of boost..kaya d sya one unit fits all, we are based in davao..we just shipped the system to anywhere inthe philippines..sa installation kailangan lng ng electrician sa pag tap ng wire sa power source from yuor ignition,tpos kailagan ka rin pagawa ng plate holder para sa pump and reservoir..lahat ng fitting instruction nandun na sa kit...very economical po sya sa maintenance,methanol and rain water or distilled water lng kailangan...

I am very much interested on how to do this on my unit.

I will try to look for the pattern. I first did it on a folder then gupit gupit. I used the bolts of the water seperator to fasten it. Any aluminum tube 2 1/2 to 3" with 45 degree fold will do. You will need scrap yero, clamps and of course filter. I will post a step by step process with pictures when im free.

I just mounted all the electrical and plumbing but havent activated it.
Bagong overhaul pa lang engine, pag fully broken in na mag Baguio or Bicol ako. Will let you know on the improvements in FC, FE and power.
Naglagay din ako ng Boost at Pyrometer/EGT para maconfirm ko ang gains and claims ng system. Lytspid distributes it sa Pinas so enquire kayo sa kanya.

also messing with the EGR helps. although Al gore will not like it.
