(First off, I don't mean to offend, I'm just pointing this out)
I compared OSM's Nov. 2009 release against Roadguide's 1.09 Demo map.
In the Angeles City area, the 2 maps are neck and neck. There are some parts of the city that are in one map and not in the other.
In Floridablanca/Porac area and Guagua/Macabebe, Roadguide is ahead, but only by little, since the roads aren't as dense as the other parts.
In San Fernando area to Candaba area, OSM is waay ahead, not only in terms of the number of roads but in road names as well (even when considering only those that are present in OSM).
:peace:

Thanks for pointing out. We're working on it, flat out. Hey, no offense taken. Just wanted to straighten out the facts. While roadguide does acknowledge that OSM has roads in some places that RG doesn't have right now, I can assure you that RG has a more detailed map than OSM. While the latest OSM release has 45,000+ kms of roads, RG has much more in terms of road length. I will not give you the exact figure but please take my word for it. If you like, you can browse provinces aside from Pampanga and compare. We're talking here of the whole PI gps map, and it's just logical that the map with more road length is the more detailed one. And that's not mentioning the POIs.
The thing is, there is more to GPS maps than just road length. The more important things are the ones that ordinary viewers cannot acknowledge because they are not shown in mapsource, like routing algorithm, route recalculation speed, etc. These are the things that can only be appreciated through experience by using the full version. And by saying that, I do hope that you do become a contributor and be part of a great mapping community.
TY
The contributor's version is not for sale and definitely not readily available for download. You have to earn it by sending your data contributions to roadguide.ph, that's why it is called "contributor's version" and not "paid version". If you don't want to contribute, download the OSM map or the free map from roadguide.ph.
kumusta,
That's what you think... I've been there and it's not that simple. Furthermore, AVT/Accu-Map online support is almost non-existent.
Anyway, there were two things raised here: The hardware; Garmin vs AVT and the map; roadguide.ph vs Accu-Map
Let's start with the hardware. Why Garmin? Off hand:
1. Value for money
2. Better route algorithm
3. Easy to use GUI
4. Good search engine
5. Software tools (Garmin or 3rd party) are available
6. Lots of models to choose from depending on the features you want
7. Garmin brand has been tried and tested and their GPS hardware are well-made
8. Text-to-speech! on most models
For the maps, don't even start to compare the roadguide.ph map to Accu-Map. No contest... Kung 10/10 ang roadguide.ph map, maybe nasa 6/10 lang ang Accu-Map. Ganun kalayo.Like I mentioned several posts up, I have both a Garmin Nuvi (personal) and AVT (my dad's) so I know what I'm saying. Inaalis ko AVT niya at nilalagay ko yung Nuvi ko if ever na kailangan ko gamitin sasakyan niya.
Admittedly, the roadguide.ph map is still far from perfect but its comprehensiveness and coverage outclass any other Philippine nav map currently available anywhere.
i second the motion of oj88, hindi lang po mas accurate ang garmin compare to avt, many of my customer who ignore first the garmin due to its cost (mahal daw) no map detailed, but after a couple of days, they return back, reason: instead they(the avt) calculate for shorter distance, they calculate longer distance and sometime it will direct you to heavy traffic area. not only that garmin supports less fuel consumtion routing (ecoroute) which is perfectly fit sa maps ng roadguide and openstreetmap, i both salute them (lalo na sa roadguide) because they also buy the specific software just to do the mapping (CGPSMAPPER SOFTWARE) correct me if i'm wrong sir oj88, well that's what i can say. instead na sabihan natin ang mga taong nagpapakahirap kuno magcon contribute (or baka kamo saan saan lang kinuha ang data) hindi naman nila siguro gagawin yun lalo na at hindi biro ang navigation at the same time i know both of them road guide and openstreetmap double check the accuracy of the maps
. We should give credits to them to help us all in navigating around in the Philippines.
To share also story of one of my customer, seaman sya for couple of years na hindi sya umuuwi ng pilipinas, noong magbakasyon sya, bumili sya ng garmin to be used going to batangas, first, he tried to use the way he knew but laking malas ng pagdating nya is putol yung tulay, so he tried to rely on garmin gps that i sell to him, it recalculated new way then, guess what nakarating sya. as he say thank you he give some pasalubong pa pag uwi hehehehehe

I have a Garmin and am using both roadguide and OSM maps. I have yet to contribute to roadguide but plan to do so in a short while.... Very useful, especially during night driving....
9101:thatsit:
i gather the data from osm and my actual tracks (as much as possible i do the tracing/plotting using my gpsr) i use also a particular software to do the mapping
i tried once roadguide.ph's 17mb version (the free version) it has lot of things to improve, i tried also to contribute but then i think they are too busy to entertain my uploaded tracks so i look for an alternative way and studied it, tested it actual turn by turn and testing in all garmin models
by the way, for info, roadguide.ph map does not work on nuvi 1300T and 1690T, you can install it but once you select the "View Map" there is no visible roads on it![]()
Poor guy. If he just bought a Garmin gps from where he came from, he could have saved a lot of money than buying from you. And if he was able to get the contributors map from roadguide.ph before he came home, he should have not been routed to the broken bridge in the first place. That broken bridge was taken out from the latest roadguide.ph map two weeks after it fell down.
Boss,
No offense, let me make it clear to you one by one: (para na rin sa kaalaman ng mga makakabasa)
On your saying:
" he should have not been routed to the broken bridge in the first place. That broken bridge was taken out from the latest roadguide.ph map two weeks after it fell down."
as i said:
"he used his prefered way, yung alam nyang way, ibig sabihin, hindi nya muna ginamit yung garmin"
On your saying:
"Poor guy. If he just bought a Garmin gps from where he came from, he could have saved a lot of money than buying from you. And if he was able to get the contributors map from roadguide.ph before he came home, he should have not been routed to the broken bridge in the first place."
as i sad:
sa amin sya bumili since he stay now for good here in the Philippines, it's ok that you buy it outside the Philippines, but how about the warranty? For example, what will you do? Punta ka sa USA para papalitan(which is quite expensive hehehehe) or you will send it through DHL | UPS | FEDEX (which took almost 2 months before you get the replacement, correct me if i'm wrong) or third you will wait for your relatives to came here in the Philippines for vacation and asked them to bring the unit to USA for replacement (assuming the time + the time from USA to Philippines using Air Cargo as fastest way but we know, it is still expensive, you do the math)
compare it when you buy it from us, let say you got warranty issues, we will replace it to you with maximum of 7 business days from your doorstep to USA back and forth. Well Boss, it's your decision where and when to buy, it's your freedom but never to compare what is the advantages and disadvantages if you buy it here or not.Our customer gallery speaks for us
(i did not use their testimonials as we know it was just type written and can modified favoring us
unlike the actual pictures of them, our customers)
Last but not the least,
You say:
" if he was able to get the contributors map from roadguide.ph before he came home"
As i know:
"before you get the contributors map, you should contribute your correct and accurate tracks or waypoints"
paano nya gagawin yun (plotting of waypoints and getting actual tracks) kung wala pa syang garmin, at isa pa noon pa lang sya uuwi ng pilipinas para mag navigate? do you get what i mean Boss?
Kung kami nga eh, we're here in the Philippines and get able to gather some data for contributing, as i said on my previous post " i tried also to contribute but then i think they are too busy to entertain my uploaded tracks so i look for an alternative way and studied it, tested it actual turn by turn and testing in all garmin models"
We aim to help our fellow tsikoteer to navigate with ease around the Philippines (not only that, we are developing also other country to be mapped and be able to be use under garmin nuvis) and not to get involve in a nonesense and boastful comments on posting![]()
I'm sure if he used the gps readily, he will be routed to that broken bridge. Why? Because you don't have an updated map. Can you boldly tell that you have taken out that bridge from your map as roadguide has done. Even your supposed "updating" is suspect. Fact is, there are hundreds of volunteer contributors that regularly updates the maps from OSM and roadguide and yet their maps are far from perfect. Unless you have at your disposal the same number of volunteers, then I can't see how you can "update" your map.
Well, you're assuming that the unit will breakdown and you're padding your price under the guise of warranty. But with your price of more than twice of what I can buy abroad, I can buy another new unit if it breaks down with some change to spare. So why the need for warranty from you?
And I do feel sorry for those people in your gallery. If only they have known that there is a better option for them.
Turns out there are optional ways to get contributor status in roadguide.ph aside from plotting actual tracks and waypoints. Fact is, there are contributors there that gained their status while they were still abroad. If you don't believe me, see this...http://roadguide.ph/forums/showthread.php?t=22. You get what I mean?
Who's "kami"? Fact is you're using OSM and roadguide map as you admitted in the other thread. Maps that were developed by volunteers to be used for free and which you modify and use in your business of which I'm sure is without written permission from their developers. And don't claim to be developing other country's map. You can't even make a decent Philippine map of your own. Your South East Asia map is a combination of free and cracked maps. Don't deny it. The same thing that you combine OSM and roadguide map for your business.
Muntik na mabangga para lang maging contributor? That's just very irresponsible and careless, IMHO.
Ano 'to, nag-join sa Tsikot para lang masabi yung unsolicited advice? Tsk tsk tsk. Why don't you find better use of your time, like teaching "yung iba (na muntik mabangga)" to take someone to do the marking of waypoints para makapag-concentrate sa pag-drive, para hindi sila danger sa ibang tao?

^ I believe it's just an exaggeration and not to be taken literally. I believe the reply meant that it does add stress and a lot of driver attention to have to stop and record a POI accurately.
If you're driving and typing at the same time on your GPS unit (or doing some other things, e.g., texting on your cellphone), your attention to the road has been diminished already, and that can cause accidents. I say he meant it literally. No offense to you, sir oj88.

it seems that merong iba na nakikinabang sa free philippine map. just a suggestion, of course with the permission ng mga contributors and officials ng gumagawa ng free map or contributors map, why don't you start a foundation then sell the map and all the proceeds ay sa foundation. nakatulong pa kayo imbes na merong nakikinabang na iba na pansarili lang nila. just my thoughts.
^ If that's the case, everybody would just buy the map and nobody (or maybe just a select few) will be left to update it.
The map has taken on a life of its own primarily because of the hundreds of contributors. Take away the initiative, and the map will die.
