January 29th, 2007 08:59 PM #971Regarding mbeige's inquiry about a site for emissions & fuel economy data on B20 & B100 biodiesel, I just saw the following:
Biodiesel is a form of diesel fuel that can be manufactured ... Mileage. Tips. Gasoline. Prices. Your MPG. Will Vary. Why is Fuel. Economy....
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/biodiesel.shtml
This is apparently a US Government website and it only deals about Soya BD. Please note that B100 Soya BD produces 10% lower fuel economy and power. B20 produces lower 2% lower fuel economy and power.
In simple terms, using B100 Soya BD means you will use 10% more diesel and B20 Soya BD will require 2% more diesel.
CME or Coconut Methyl Ester (the BD made from coconut oil in the Philippines) appears to be the only BD that can deliver 10% fuel savings at 1%.
In my case, I get >10% fuel savings even with 0.5% CME only. Please support my efforts to prove this nationwide so we can together show the world how good CME is.

can't point you to a website but I've read an actual report done on CME (sample provided by the Philippines) and test done in Japan, 70% reduction in airborne particulates and 20% reduction in NOx from the emissions with a mere 1% (or 5% yata?) addition of CME in LSD. meron na rin ginawang study ang SAE (society of automotive engineers) of the US way back in 1998 (take note this is almost 10 years ago), specifically on exhaust emission and engine performance for a stationary diesel engine using coco methyl ester as fuel. subukan mo google, SAE report no. 981156. hopefully naka share na yung PDF file for free. 3 years ago, di pa eh, bibilhin mo ma yung report hehehe. hth

January 31st, 2007 08:59 AM #975What brand did you buy? BioActiv, Estrol or what?
How are you planning to try it? At 100%?
If 1%, mix 20L BD to 2,000L diesel (or 1L BD to 100L diesel.)
I suggest you try 0.5% first for 3,000 to 5,000 km, then try 1%.
If 0.5%, mix 20L to 4,000L diesel (or 0.5L to 100L diesel) -- mas matipid!
Re: Price Increase - Don't worry about it. In a few weeks ALL diesel sold will be pre-blended with 1% as per the BioFuels Act. This will happen whether we like it or not.
Pare, ingat kung 100% ang gagamitin mo. Balita ko nag-le-"levitate" ang tsikot para hindi magasgas ang gulong. Ang "fuel savings" at "pollution reduction" ay 300% -- WOW! Mahirap lang daw lumiko kasi walang "traction" ang gulong -- for this reason, the BioFuels Act only mandates 1%.

Biogas.works & Rsnald,
Thanks for your responses, I've been meaning to get into Biodiesel myself here in the US but like you said hindi ganun ka-efficient yung soy bean products nila as compared to CME. Right now we have ULSD, maybe it's the increased kerosene content in the winter diesel but I've had lower MPG so far (from 25 to 23MPG). I know that when they made fuel stations pump out ULSD my MPG was the same as before, 25MPG.
Here's another question, that maybe you might know the answers to. I've heard that biodiesel will degrade rubber used in fuel lines (and perhaps, seals in the IP and related devices) over time. Of course, the rate of degradation will depend on the condition of the rubber, percent of biodiesel, and type of rubber lines used (fuel lines).
Would you happen to know any info about the degradation of rubber fuel lines between CME and Soya BD?
Here's something that may also be a good insight to using biodiesel:

February 1st, 2007 08:12 AM #977BioDiesels (BD) degrade rubber in fuel lines. But most (newer) vehicles now use a better type of rubber (viton?) and these are not affected by BD. In the US, where B20 and higher of Soya BD is recommended, the degradation will probably be higher. In the Philippines where 1% (or 0.5%) is recommended, the quantity is too minute to matter even if vehicles still have some of the older rubber parts.

on rubber degradation, di ko alam kung ano material of construction ng old rubber hose sa mga older model cars. para safe, palitan mo na lang ng rubber hose rated for gasoline yung mga rubber hose ng fuel lines mo.
tama si biogas, viton will resist biodiesel.... but viton is not often used for automotive applications. it's too expensive. maybe for the higher end cars they're using it.
simple test, put pure BD in a small open can, cut off a small portion of the rubber tubing where your fuel passes thru and immerse that portion in the BD. you'll see if it will swell or if it will breakdown the piece of rubber tubing overnight or over a few days. now multiply that rate of degradation by 2 or 3 times since the engine bay is hot so you'll have heat increasing the degradation effect.
for the technically inclined, pure BD is as strong a solvent as xylene, or almost as strong as toluene. there's a scale of solvent dissolving power called kauri-butanol value, look it up on the net. Kerosene, or "gaas" in layman's term, is way way down in that solvency scale, but kerosene is a stronger solvent than pure diesel. so there's the comparison of pure BD vs. pure diesel in terms of solvency power

Basta CME ang ginagamit mo, even if it is home-made like I used before, OK sya![/QUOTE]
Thanks a lot sa reply Sir BIOGAS
Yes! green container nga yon!

February 1st, 2007 09:15 PM #980Yo! Is it ok also if I will use it with old model L300? kailangan ba na ipalinis yung fuel line/tank? Paano ba ang tamang ratio kung gagamitin mo yung biodiesel?
