Based on experience, it is true that more and more coconut farmers are replacing their trees with other crops. This trend actually started when copra prices started to fall due to the increasing popularity of palm, canola, and corn oil as food oil. Couple this with an onslaught of typhoons and the result is a dwindling supply of coco oil. Low price and lack of government incentives forces coco farmers to abandon the industry.
The introduction of CME is a ray of hope for coconut farmers like my parents. With a regular and local need of copra, this gives them an incentive to plant more trees and revive the industry. CME will not only revive the agricultural industry but also reduce our dependence to foreign oil. It is beyond comprehension why the government is sooo slow in giving incentives to farmers and biodiesel producers.
It is not illegal for individuals to buy raw coconut oil and make Biodiesel for commercial purposes. Just make sure that its quality is up to standards and people will line up to buy them. Biodiesel use has been growing for more than five years WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF GOVERNMENT AND THE OIL INDUSTRY. Just ask the pioneers from Tsikot. Forget the government, forget the big oil companies. We can do this on our own!
So, I am calling all Diesel engine users to start using CME and support small CME producers, and in addition, help educate other Diesel engine users to do the same.Last edited by Hibiki; May 5th, 2007 at 12:07 PM.

Let us think positive!
Think like a Viet cong during the Vietnam war against the Americans.
Think like the CD pirates against the original producers.
What is nice about the fuel is that it can be manufactured by anyone who has knowledge, equipment and raw materials. It can be done anywhere in the Philippines as long as there are coconut or jathropa. Its legal to do so. It can be used by any diesel engine.
Cooperatives especially dealing with coconut or jathropa should be taught to manufacture there own CME to sell within their barangay. Farm pumps, kuliglig, jeepney, trucks and even gensets will be the primary target.
Imagine how many liters of fuel can be produced by these coops by serving their own community.

May 6th, 2007 04:43 PM #1115Caltex had a press release yesterday saying they will begin selling diesel with pre-blended 1% CME starting today.
Ditto for Shell in a little advertisement in today's papers.
No word on prices, from Petron and the others. I haven't driven around yet to check. Sana pareho!

Manila gas firms must now have bio-fuels
Gas stations have started pumping biofuels in diesel-powered cars in the country as the Biofuels Act took effect Sunday. The law requires all oil firms to blend one percent of coco-methyl ester (CME) on their diesel products. Within two years, oil companies will also have to blend 5% of bio-ethanol in the other gasoline brands, ABS-CBN reported.

Oil firms said there is no immediate impact of biodiesel in oil prices yet. They added that the movement of prices in the coming days would still be determined by market forces.
Mark Quebral, Corporate Manager of Chevron Philippines also doubts that the biodiesel blends would have negative effects on vehicles. "It's clean, more efficient", Quebral said.

May 8th, 2007 07:38 AM #1119Petron says BioFuels Law has minimal impact on diesel price
http://businessmirror.com.ph/05082007/economy05.html
PETRON Corp., one of the country’s refiners, assured consumers Monday that the impact of the implementation of the one-percent coco-methyl ester (CME) diesel blend component of the Biofuels Act of 2006 will not be as significant as earlier claimed.
An oil company earlier projected that a one percent CME-diesel blend will cost around 30 centavos to 50 centavos a liter, which the oil companies have decided to temporarily absorb the impact to ensure a smooth transition.
“The effect of the CME on diesel prices will not really be very significant,” Jose Campos, Petron vice president for marketing, assured Department of Energy officials during on-site inspection at the Pandacan depot.
Petron buys its CME requirement from biodiesel manufacturer Senbel Fine Chemicals Co. and Chemrez Technologies Inc., among other suppliers.
“Our efforts are really concentrated in making the biodiesel available in all parts of the country. We have yet to think much about pricing it,” said Campos.
He added that pricing is something they have yet to consider, saying that they will also have to look at crude and Mean of Platts Singapore prices.
“In other words all of these factors will be considered in totality,” he said.
