sir max, kelan mo tinest-drive yung XT. was it as advertised? i'm afraid we're building this car up so much that some people with high very expectations might be disappointed.

early/mid 2003 nung nagtry ako ng mga tsikot (including wrx wagon, endeavor, sequioa, quest, and fx). it did feel powerful for its class. i also liked the clean interior layout, huge sun/moonroof, and the sleeper look.

its really hard not to expect a lot from this vehicle, esp once you read all the reviews and awards it received.

    Forester XT-
The idiosyncratic Forester used to inhabit a class of one. A mix of off-roader, hot hatch and estate car, it's a quaint-looking hybrid, but it could be seen as the fore-runner to the likes of the Audi allroad and Volvo's XC70.

The Forester is much more down to earth than those two gentrified 4x4 estates and costs considerably less to buy. If sophisticated styling is your motoring watchword, you'll want to look elsewhere, but if on/off-road abilities and straightforward practicality sway you, look no further.

Based on the well-loved and well-proven Impreza platform, with all the all-wheel-drive abilities that implies, the Forester also benefits from the marque's legendary reliability record.

There's also plenty of fun to be had taking advantage of the trademark Subaru flat-four's low centre of gravity by caning it through corners.

A brace of two-litre engines are on offer and for such a practical car, the Turbo version offers quite outrageous performance. The new 2.5-litre is quicker still.

The interior is typically modest, but has what must be the easiest-folding rear seats in the business - a flat load area is available in seconds.

Don't expect too much in the way of ultimate off-road abilities - but on a trip to Norway our long-term Turbo proved as much of a hoot on semi-frozen forest tracks as it did on the road. So, practicality can be fun.

Rav4-The RAV4 is one of the smartest of the smaller 4x4s. In fact, it could almost be mistaken for a mini Mercedes M-Class - except that it's much more reliable, coming top of all the 4x4s in our 2004 survey.

The interior is roomy and versatile - with MPV-style rear seats which can be moved around, folded over or removed - and the boot is easily one of the largest in the class.

Decent ground clearance means that the RAV4 can tackle forest trails with ease, but it's not so clever off-road once things get really sticky.

The lack of a low-ratio 'box and little low-down pulling power from the petrol engine mean it gets itself into holes easier than it can haul itself out.

The turbodiesel, though slower, has more accessible torque and is the wiser choice if you plan to tackle anything more arduous than that forest trail.

Happily, the RAV4 is exceptionally good on the road. Which is, of course, where it will spend most of its time anyway. The performance may not be earth shattering, but there is certainly more than enough oomph for it to hold its own in the outside lane of the motorway.

Its five-speed manual gearbox has a sweet change and the clutch is light and easy to use. There's good feel from the brake pedal, mated to decent anti-lock-enhanced stopping power.

Its road manners are exemplary, with good steering, tidy handling and decent body control.

    X-lander-
Just what the world needs. Another Freelander rival for all those wannabe snowboarding, mountain biking, surfing, bungee jumping suburban mums. The X-Trail has a number of unique features to enhance the extreme lifestyle of its owner: water repellent seat fabrics (an option), a wipe-clean load area with a huge snowboard hatch and split/fold rear seats.

Special glass reduces the heat and UV entering the cabin and there's climate control and a 'skyroof' to further mess with the elements inside the car. Doubtless very helpful in the Rockies, less so in Rotherham.

It isn't a full-time 4x4. For normal road use the front wheels are driven, but there are two 4x4 modes. Reasonable ground clearance and short overhangs give the X-Trail decent off-road ability, but its limits are lower than a Jeep's.

ABS with EBD and Brake Assist all help out on the road, together with ESP and Active Brake Limited Slip Differential. It's very effective, but we suspect that extreme sports fans would like a bit of a powerslide on their way to the base-jumping site.

There are three engine/transmission choices: two-litre 138bhp and 2.5 163bhp petrols with a slick-shifting five-speed manual 'box and a 2.2 turbodiesel with a slightly stiff six-speeder. That aside, the X-Trail's controls are all light and friendly and the driving position is good.

Hardly the most extreme machine, but not bad.
