November 19th, 2008 10:28 AM #181SUVs, CUVs, AUVs are nothing more than segmentation marketing stunts and have no relevance at all in the real world. Good road -- bad road frequencies, load usage and travel purpose are more indicative of what expensive vehicle you'll need in this lifetime -- and maybe the next as well. Unfortunately, this thread invited flames because it did nothing to help make such kind of distinctions.
If you drive say, 90% of the time on good urban roads, you can't go wrong with Santa Fes, Vera Cruzes, Outlanders and CRVs. They ride very well and and have the additional impact of showing at least 95% of other Filipinos that you are earning better than them.
Fortuners and Monteros are for those who have to more than occasionally encounter two-foot or higher floods and mud roads. They really are not designed for mostly urban roads -- there will probably be lots and lots of them because they are relative cheap for the kind of reliable service they provide. Besides, unlike other nationalities, except possibly the poorer ones like Indonesians and Indians, Filipinos tend to have too many relatives and are thus required to carry five or more people often. Fortuners and Monteros are for those who are too ashamed to be seen by their neighbors and office subordinates in FX-class, low-middle income Crosswinds, Innovas and Adventures. If you really like a perfect SUV and CUV, you don't have to look far. Look for a Bimmer X! They are always perfect and are priced for platinum-card holders -- uhm, sorry if you don't have that kind of card.
Finally, if you have to go off the urban roads at least 25% of the time, each of the latest generation of CRDI pickups -- regardless of brand -- can't be beat. Actually, if you know how, and are willing to blow at least 500K, to modify suspensions and brakes and do all the other nasty high-tech underbody work, each of the new pickups I've seen and tested will crush all of the fancy SUVs and CUVs in both usability, toughness and ride.
If you want to ride the SUV-cum-CUV utlimate warrior or Animal, there can be only one. Yes, that's the pinoy jeepney. It's been around forever, logged a trillion miles across all terrain and cliffs, have seen the birth and deaths of millions of pinoy passengers, and is really the most cost-effetive choice and will always outlive all the SUVs and CUVs that you will see in the rest of your mortal years in this God-forsaken country.

Amen to that brother,
regardless for me it is on the good reason for you what you want to get like me im using my triton pick-up truck (strada) for off road and planning to get next year the montero for me and my wife's every day city rig. Have the strong under chasis of a light truck and with the coil suspension a comfort ride of a sedan.

hindi naman masyadong matagtag ang FORT. truck based siya kaya more on the hard side. nakasakay na ako ng fort (pre facelifted version) at para sa akin, acceptable naman ang tagtag niya. sa MS, no idea, hindi pa kasi ako nakakasakay eh, but i read here that its ride is better than fort.
OT: bino_rocha kaw ba to? post number 1 at dito pa sa thread na to.

Back to topic, im not into offroading so my choice would be Sta. Fe, for me its the best pero kung kelangan ko mag offroad mag montero nalang ako kakasawa na Fortuner eh parang 3210 na recon at generic pa masyado
regarding japanese & korean cars i wouldnt mind the difference eh kung masira ehdi bili ulit ng bago we all know all things have limitations.

November 19th, 2008 01:11 PM #187among the japs, honda lang at par with the trends of the times. and they dont overprice. E10 is relatively cheap nowadays, and it's only Honda who had the moral obligation to inform and to assure the public that all their models are E10-compatible.Last edited by actor21; November 19th, 2008 at 01:13 PM. I think you have it the other way around. The first original SUV's were all truck based vehicles with ladder frames. Jeep Willys, CJ, and Wrangler; Land Rovers, Chevy Blazers, Ford Bronco, Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrol So if you go buy that definition the Sante Fe is a car(Sonata)trying to be an SUV.
Because the the SUV category started as vehicles that could go off road and carry people and camping/hunting supplies. Some were used by people in rural areas who wanted to be able to carry people and other things like in pick up trucks. The 4 door pick up didn't come out in the US until the 2000 Frontier, SUV's served that purpose for them. People who wanted to just stay on the road and carry people and things drove around in station wagons during that time. The crossover category didn't start until Toyota/Lexus made the Harrier/RX300 in 1997. People who have used SUV's since their inception consider the crossover's glorified station wagons. The market changed in the US because alot of the people who bought the truck based SUV's in the 90's wanted a car with the height of the trucks. These were also the soccer moms who stopped using the minivan and bought the truck based SUV's. When the crossovers came out they got the elevated station wagons with better mileage than the truck based SUV's. The crossover's serve their purpose for people who want the image of an SUV but not the actual abilities of an SUV, alot are also sold as FWD as opposed to AWD. Crossovers will never be able to tow like the truck based SUV's because they don't have the chassis to allow it. The introduction of the crossover was the best thing to happen because now the buyers of truck based SUV's will actually use it for what it was meant for and not just to bling it out. Well except in the Philippines where they are status symbols and nobody actually uses a brand new pick up truck to carry dirt.Last edited by redorange; November 19th, 2008 at 02:20 PM.

Understood redorange. My first post was totally a mistake but again it was meant to fancy the trolls
As for my 2nd post. Well that is what is happening in the market. It was not meant to counter the roots of the SUV. But truck based SUV is in a decline in favor of crossovers.
