Left alone, this can lead to more serious engine problems.

Locally, the 2000-up Corolla Altis (with ZZ series engines) and 2nd gen RAV4 have shown this kind of problem.
^From firsthand experience... of course... all it means is that you have to be very diligent in changing the oil, and that you need to stick to the shorter 5000 kilometer oil change if you drive in the city a lot. (even with synthetics... the problem was first noted with synthetic oils on the long US oil change)

The problem with the current Corolla is it's part of Toyota's world wide recall with more defects surfacing every other week on their line of cars.

Toyota Philippines is still denying that local cars are affected but inspite of that, local Toyota owners know better because of problems such as the fuel tank leak issue with the Innova and the engine problem found on Toyota D4D vehicles, both which Toyota Philippines is denying.

And then there is the "sludging" issue with the ZZ series engines found in the Corolla Altis.

We have 2006 Civic 1.8S AT and Altis 2009 1.6G AT.

*Performance for civic, due to stiffer suspension, strong brakes, very responsive steering, and more responsive engine. very stable and solid car even at 150kph.

*Comfort- altis has a very soft steering very easy to manuever, you can move by a finger only. But it's kinda scary on high speed driving. and suspension is softer than civic too. comfort not-so. it's too cramped at the rear seats.

Overall i still prefer civic, its much fun to drive.

    test drive both sir.

The Corolla has an electronically assisted speed-sensitive steering system while the Civic makes do with a hydraulic steering system.

In hydraulic power steering (HPS) uses hydraulic pressure supplied by an engine-driven pump to assist the motion of turning the steering wheel.

Electric power steering (EPS) is more efficient than the hydraulic power steering, since the electric power steering motor only needs to provide assistance when the steering wheel is turned, whereas the hydraulic pump must run constantly. In EPS the assist level is easily tunable to the vehicle type, road speed, and even driver preference. An added benefit is the elimination of environmental hazard posed by leakage and disposal of hydraulic power steering fluid.
