December 3rd, 2009 11:41 AM #11I'm seriously considering this Nissan S3 ST with sr20de redtop engine:

Any thoughts? How does the redtop differ from the black top?
The price range of the sentras' with the stock GA16 engine is almost the same with that of the transplanted SR20, so I think I'm getting more value choosing the latter.

December 3rd, 2009 11:44 AM #12Is the SR20DE as "bullet-proof" as the GA16DE? Assuming both engines are subjected to the same use/abuse? I understand the GA16 has timing chain, what about the SR20?

The SR20DE, at this age, will have a few issues... mostly relating to electronics and electrical parts... coil packs, idle motor, MAF sensor... but mechanically, it's a very strong engine... much stronger than the GA16DE and capable of withstanding a lot of abuse, even in non-turbo form, due to the stout bottom end.
The SR20DE uses a timing chain that is usually maintenance-free, but you have to check the condition of the tensioners, anyway... any slack in the tension can cause stress that will eventually break the chain. Well maintained, an SR20DE can hit up to 500,000 kilometers if driven lightly.
