I'd also go for the Sportage on this one as the space (think how much gear one packs up for out-of-towners), ride height (visibility and going through the occasional rough patch), and creature comforts compensate for the slightly higher budget. Sure, the Tucson 2.0 Theta II (which shares the same platform as the Sportage) needs an extra ooomph to climb Baguio quickly (due to its apparent long-gearing configuration), but long highway runs are quite okay. in the city, the Sportage's aggressive stance would make it less prone to bullying by other large vehicles, and, given Kia's sportier tuning versus Hyundai, should prove to be adequate in providing much needed torque to zip in and out of traffic.
If I were to stick strictly to below 1M though (thus not allowing me to get the Sportage), I still won't get the Elantra... I'd probably go for either the Corolla 1.6V, the Lancer EX MX, or even the Nissan Grand Livina Luxury 1.8 AT Roadmaster Edition if space is a requirement.

The Theta II is actually a good platform. 166 hp * 6200 rpm with 20.1 kgm * 4600 rpm of torque is quite good... It's just that its long gear configuration on the Tucson makes the Tucson more suitable for long highway drives instead of hill climbing or city traffic avoidance. I couldn't find a comparison of gearing ratios for the Sportage versus the Tucson which would make for an interesting study.
If Hyundai gave us the GDI version of the Theta on the Tucson then we'd probably not have these complaints, heheh! Sportage SX with the Theta II 2.0L Turbo GDI? FTW!

Baka naman yung tipong 70-90km/h more or less? But still... 3.2km/L?!
Same gearbox lang ba ang Sportage and Tucson? So 3.2km/L din siya sa Kennon Road?
So what happened after the turbocharging? Did you have to change other components? How much did the hp and torque improve according to dyno results?

Average speed uphill 60km/h barely hit 80km/h.
Same 6 speed tranny. More or less ganyan din ang FC kung aggressive driving uphill. Para hindi mabitin sa torque.
Turbocharging will be done on September. Humahanap pa kami ng parts. We have to replace the MAF sensor, injectors, intake and full exhaust. Guaranteed +100WHP, not sure about the torque. Expected cost is around 300K. Sure ako kakabugin nito yung R-eVGT.
BTW, di ako yung nag-drive nung Theta II uphill. I'm driving my own Tucson R-eVGT LMX20. Kwentuhan lang kami after nung trip, di kasi masyado nag-popost dito yung nag-drive eh.

June 19th, 2011 12:22 AM #29Hahaha~ ang kwento naman may tanong at sagot din. Agree about the Hyundai diesels.

The Theta II was in front of me. Yun nasa harap nya R-eVGT Premium din (like mine)
Quote mo nalang itong message papunta dun.
