With the engines today, I wouldn't look down at the new 3-cylinder engines. Some are built for fuel efficiency while some are on a different league and can even give bigger displacement 4-bangers a tough challenge.

I think one of the hesitation in regards to 3-cylinder engines is that they are naturally unbalanced compared to a 4-cylinder one. We still have yet to see if these new generation of 3-cylinder engines will last a lifetime.

Ford and BMW has been very successful with their new 3-cylinder engines. The Fiesta 1.0L Ecoboost, Ford Focus 1.0L Ecoboost, Mini Cooper 1.5L, and a few others have shown that performance is not compromised with their 3-cylinder engines. Volvo is now looking to introduce their small cars with a new 3-cylinder engine. Ford designed the flywheel of its multi-awarded 3-cyl 1.0L Ecoboost engine to counter the unbalance brought about by the uneven number of cylinders.

I drive a Fiesta Ecoboost and its engine may sound like a 3-banger upon starting up but it purrs like a 4-banger when warmed up. As to performance, it's one heck of an engine. The torque at low RPMs is enough to get the Fiesta to triple digit speeds (from a stop) in around 9 seconds.

Either will do, no difference in terms of performance when you just use the car for mostly city driving routes. However, a small engine (3-banger or 4-banger) will not make wonders in fuel efficiency or performance if you put in a heavy car. The more important thing is the power-to-weight ratio in a car.
