The air intake is behind the left headlight. Compared to a sedan such as the vios, it is higher.
The computer box is behind the glove compartment I think.
Since modern efi engines do not have distributors nor ignition coils, I think they are more resistant to water than those that still have them.Last edited by meledson; January 16th, 2010 at 11:28 AM.

They still have ignition coils. They're just directly fired by the ECU, so there is less chance of crossfiring when wet. There's still danger with a headlight intake as compared to the inner fender intake, as a bow wave can sometimes splash it. But yes, the Avanza headlight is higher off the ground than the Vios's intake.
I'm still trying to remember whether the Avanza or both the Avanza and Vios have flood-proof ECUs. I know a Toyota owner mentioned this before... that these were the only Toyota products that had ECUs that were resistant to water damage...

I don't really understand your point. What would you like to happen? None of us actually buy any vehicle because we don't know what's going to happen? Crash tests give you an idea of how a car will react to most impacts. They won't cover 100% of those impacts, but those they don't cover are either rare or unsurvivable in any case.
Note: More people have died in the past two or three years (in the Philippines) due to stones being thrown through the windshield from overpasses than through hitting telephone poles. And yet they still sell cars that aren't protected against this. Because to make them proof against this would cost a lot of money... money only the very rich can afford to spend on their cars. (I don't know about you, but if I had to spend an extra 1-2m to make my truck death-proof, I'd rather buy an armored car...)
Does this make the pole impact test unimportant? No. It's because of that test that people actually survive impacts with telephone poles... and it remains an important consideration when buying a car.
I ain't going to argue with you for argument's sake. So please stop bringing up pointless arguments.

January 16th, 2010 05:32 PM #85each and every car model has its pros and cons. soooo... after so many comments and insults, what shall it be, my good man? avanza or vios?
btw, between avanza and innova, i'll take the innova. everytime.. it cost me 600K to come to this conclusion. (ok. 100K. tanggalin na natin yung re-sale money.)

January 16th, 2010 10:07 PM #86if not for that one standing issue, i'd go for the avanza:
-- flexibility is always a plus for me.
-- higher ground clearance seems best, what with potholes and floods being a part of everyday driving

I think...I'll go for the Avanza because of it's higher ground clearance and have a huge space for cargo.
Before I started looking at the Vios and Avanza, I started looking at small cars like the Alto, i10, and Getz. But after seing cars wade through flood waters, I got scared of getting a small car.
