+1 on the Jimny. Available with four-wheel drive... live-axles all around (much less prone to damage than what's under the Vios and Avanza... since the Avanza is basically a unibody car, and not a truck).

It's a totally crap vehicle to drive on the streets... lumpy ride and all... but if you lead an active lifestyle, it's great.

Only problem is it has no cargo space.

I've done one-week tests of both the Vios and the Avanza. I've talked to owners of both cars, both online and offline. I've observed and driven these cars in various states of repair and various ages... seen how they wear down over time (the Vios's interior is more robust... but still awfully plasticky... both cars have relatively soft suspensions). And I've done fuel economy testing for both. Vios has an edge, of course.

Assumed. You don't own either vehicle, and don't know the cost of repair. At least meledson does, so he can give good feedback on that.

You're basing your entire argument on theoreticals... not on actual, useable information.

I don't answer all of these threads because I feel I don't have enough experience of certain cars to give an informed opinion. But at least I don't pass on false or useless information based on theories that have no foundation in reality... ...(ever lock up your tires letting off the gas pedal? Come on... try it... it would be fun to find out if that foil-hatted guy was right...)

*ckctlmd: If the Jimny is out of the picture... the Avanza is better for going out with three other people and carrying gear into the wilderness. But you'll need to look at them to get an idea of how much gear you're going to bring and how much will fit. Like meledson says... neither is a 4x4, and they can't go very far off-road. While the Avanza's ground clearance gives it an advantage, its road-biased tires won't get you too far if the road is slippery.

If the gear you're hauling is heavy, you might want to pony up for an Avanza 1.5. Much, much better interior. Better power-to-weight ratio... and the seven seats can come in handy should the need ever arise.

Don't want a Crosswind? Only brand-new car on the market (besides maybe the base D-Max and the Starex TCi) that doesn't care how bad our diesel is. (I sometimes fill up at the takal-takal sari-sari stores out in the provinces, in emergency cases) Terrible, terrible ride, soft body-shell... but the handling is more biased to safe understeer than the Avanza, and the cargo capacity is enormous.

Medyo mahal nga lang, for what you get, nowadays. At least they're finally Euro2 compliant, which will keep the MAPSA off your back for another few years.

presumably, if you need to go over rough roads, the Vios seems out of place. Baka maiwan ung pang-ilalim ng vios sa Pinatubo B)

Avanza has higher ground clearance, much better suited imho. Though personally i do have concerns about the body -- i.e. how it holds up in crash testing; ung Vios at least GOA ung body niya.

Yup, at least you know that the Vios has been through crash safety testing.

Well, depends. If it's just two people in the Jimny, you have the rear area for some cargo... the bigger stuff would have to go on top.

Therein lies the rub. I don't know how many kilograms the stock roof rails are rated to hold. You might need to add an aftermarket set.

Of course, aside from the Rubicon, the Jimny is the cheapest go-anywhere-do-anything vehicle available. Still regret not buying one, but c'est la vie.

    icic...that's good news then.

Medyo nag alangan kasi ako sa avanza after that big SCTex accident late last year; i think all the fatalities were riding on the avanza that got smashed up real bad....

... although i hasten to add, i don't know the whole story -- for all we know the avanza got a direct hit from the 16-wheeler -- talagang walang laban yan. it's just that out of all the cars that were involved ung avanza ang pinakagrabe.

Avanza 1.3 J M/T (5 seater) or Vios 1.3 J M/T ... which would you choose?
