I understand the concerns on longevity, although I noticed that people only raise the concern for the Everest with its 2.2L 160hp engine. If you look at HP/liter, the Everest makes 73 HP/L while the Montero makes 75 HP/L yet noone bats an eyelash about its low displacement, high output nature. Also, Isuzu also employs a 1.9L 150HP engine on its MUX and that makes 79 HP/L.
I'm sure back in the day there were also naysayers who were doubting the high output of CRDi engines over their old-school counterparts. Save for a few misses like the Trooper's 4JX1, CRDis have generally been a big leap forward.
Now with more advanced VGTs, manufacturers are able to make more power and torque from smaller engines, so "overstressed" is really relative once you consider the tech involved. For this reason I'm not really concerned that the Everest has a smaller displacement than the rest of the bunch.
