well, you could probably have gotten a 2002 altis for 260K, in good condition already, had you "shopped around" a bit.

Car still looks good based on the pics (will be attaching some).
If ever it will primarily be used on weekdays (school-home v.v) and mga lakad narin.

Now I've heard this specific car isn't particularly fuel efficient but I don't really mind since hindi naman sobrang traffic dito sa probinsiya and di naman kalayuan.

My other concern is with the transmission since I've read about problems with this car's A/T.

Other issues: slight problem with the passenger side door handle (fixable DAW)

Ang kaso lang nawala daw yung orig CR, photocopy lang meron sakanya. Di pa kami nakapagusap regarding this kung paano.

    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

When buying an "old" 2nd hand car, always include repair charges. That's the whole price of the car. I estimate around P220,000 total (repainting, body repair not included).

Repairs/replacements include - timing belt change, valve adjustment, water pump, camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, rear crankshaft seal, fan belt, valve cover gasket, o-rings, distributor cap, radiator hoses, heater core hoses, thermostat, radiator cap, compressor, alternator, radiator (if plastic parts are already brittle), grounding kit, locks, power windows, rotors, brake calipers, brake pads, clutch, suspension assembly, bushings, engine mount bushings, etc.

    That's your OPTION 1.

    OPTION 2 - buy a newer model.
    OPTION 3 - d/p for a brand new car.

Have patience to save a bit more. It's just time and it's free.

Older cars are already deemed "project cars" for the hobbyist/restorer fanboy. Lol.

I forgot. With cars as old as this, do check the oil cap. If it's covered with whitish goo paste or the exhaust pipe has a white smoke or the spark plugs are wet, the head gasket needs replacement. The coolant is already leaking into the engine. The engine might also be warped and needs machining. Or, worse, cracked.

AVOID at all cost as you'll be spending for a surplus engine. Good as junk.

    my bottomline,
"if you know your way, and really know your way, around used cars, then you will probably be at home with old, used cars."
but if you are a newcomer to car ownership, "this will be a great way to learn auto mechanics". at great expense.

Yung officemate ko bought the 2nd gen accord (7th ata yun pag international) for 125k. First visit nya sa mechanic gumastos sya ng almost 25k. Replace ng bnew radiator, some parts sa tranny, and iba pa.

Check mo.

Buying old cars is not all that bad... We have a 21 year old Granvia currently with 175tkms on the clock. A converted Japan surplus unit at that. Suspension problems? Check. Aircon problems? Check. Electrical problems? Check. Needed repainting? Check! However, the engine itself is as good as gold. Nothing but routine maintenance done on it. No overheating episodes and no black smoke even under hard acceleration. Right now with all the problems addressed, it is driven almost everyday, with no plans of letting go of it anytime soon.

Sometimes you get lucky, especially if the owner uses the car as a daily driver. You can then be certain that the car is, at the very least, roadworthy. Just remember to bring along a mechanic, and never ever be in a rush to make a purchase.
