afaik it was also a SOHC 4G92 clone. not all parts were swappable (we changed the CV joints twice; the ones for the local lancer wouldn't fit). it did have a nice engine note when revved hard and handled pretty decently.
A then local Malaysian gov't representative family friend has one back in 97. A right hand drive unit. I remember it was nice, and my dad used to enjoy driving it. About the spotty build quality, it was not a Proton exclusive issue. The Lancer itlog itself has some quality issues on its mechanicals.

Edit para di OT: learned to drive with that red car. Timing chain and used ATF even when it was an MT. Ignore my sister in the foreground.

Wala akong pics ng mga lumang oto namin. But we used to have 2 Cortinas and Opel Rekord sabay silang 3, this is earlier on an Escort and a full race Gemini for dad. Tapos Ford Telstar TX5 pa service ng papa ko sa office. Ford boy ang tatay ko haha

Our 1.3 Laser had Nodalo headers and Rota 13" banana rims shod with very thick sidewall tires. Tukod pa so the rear fenders will clear the tires Will look for more pics of it.

First to go was the sheetmetal above the exhaust. Fried our young brains for quite a while.

That's a nice one. I've seen one with manual transmission and the 2.0L petrol engine some days ago, but if I were to buy one I'd get a diesel version, they're nearly indestructible...
