i would suggest you get a hyundai tucson for the following reasons:
    1) roomy interior
    2) quite decent ride quality for an SUV
    3) go anywhere ability - you can go to places a normal sedan can't
    4) for the gasoline variant, fuel mileage is quite good considering it's an SUV
    5) dealers are giving away discounts starting at P50k for the gasoline variant

This is IF TS will have problems when it comes to budget or he's opting for a cheaper car.

But for now, he can go over 700 thousand.

    tell you what:
pile your folks in and see how you all fit. and remember, kids grow fast. don't forget the luggage. we're only 2 adults and 2 high school kids, and i already am thinking of retiring the 13 year old sentra s3. we much prefer the innova, which we have had for over 3 years.
bottom line: get the largest car that can fit your neighborhood and your garage, and your pocketbook.
as to maintenance and upkeep, well, i figure with my usage, i can easily spend a yearly 20K more for the gas innova over the diesel innova, fuel prices alone.
manual or automatic? it's an age-old argument. and it's still a personal choice.

Budget: Around 1M, but with financing.

Personal preferences: Gusto ko nung medyo with the times ang hitsura. I know it will eventually fall out of fashion pero better later than now. :D
dalawa lang nasa isip ko: innova or livina

    3. Toyota Altis A/T - 869,000
    - Very comfortable... soft suspension, soft seats. Very relaxing to drive. Until you actually have to turn... or brake... Interior plastics not as good as previous Corollas, and nowhere near as good as Civic's. Rear seat kind of small compared to Civic.
Pardon my ignorance, noob here also,, wondering what's the technical explanation/meaning of this phrase "Until you actually have to turn...or brake..." Does this mean, the steering & breaking system of Altis is not that good? --Im considering a 2002 Altis pa naman.. hehe

    I suggest a Mazda3 hatchback.

    899K V variant

    AT
fuel efficient (once used for a week average 9.5km/l city with slight hataw mode pero sedan 1.6S yun)
    roomy for passenger and cargo
    easy and fun to drive
    lots of feature

p.s mang hagle ka na lang for discounts since palabas na yung new model

    or

    Livina 1.8XR

    908K AT

slightly less equipped than the top model but definitely has everything that you need to have.
7 seats, room for cargo and economical engine.

    or

    Chevrolet Optra 1.6LS wagon

    879K AT

Roomy Optra sedan plus roomy cargo
many found it to be more efficient than the sedan 'daw'
    lots of features
    value for money

    or

    Suzuki APV-II SGX

    810K AT

7 seater, 4 captains chair and rear bench
flexible seating and room for cargo
    dual airbags
    fully equipped

    or

    Toyota Innova E dsl

    1.022M AT

Bigger and better than the Avanza
moderately equipped but has everything you may need
diesel is absolute better than the VVT-i counterpart
has decent safety feature like driver's airbag and ABS with ebd

So CarNoob - what did you end up buying? I'm not a car guru but based from what I read, the Optra Wagon would be a good choice. I was just thinking about how sayang the space is when not fully utilized during your daily commute to and from work. justmy 2 cents worth :D

^^ Avoid chevrolet cars. I`ve driven an optra so maaany times ( 2004 LS ) and heck, my money is burning because of it's gas.

And ... the optra is just too heavy.

    `nuff said.
