DCT and CVT, which car has one?

Toyota CVT's may be better than others, but they still have some problems here and there.

They are still not bulletproof.

Buyer still beware.

Better to avoid if it can be avoided, IMO.

But then every other automaker out there is going this route.

Toyota is recalling about 3,400 of its 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchbacks because of a faulty component in the transmission. If the part fails while the car is in motion, it could cause the vehicle to lose its power. This could increase the risk of a crash—especially if the failure happens when the vehicle is traveling at a high speed, the automaker says.

Toyota says it plans to replace the transmissions in all affected vehicles, and will alert owners as soon as it is ready to make those repairs.

Only Corolla Hatchbacks with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are included in the recall.

Can you say the same for Golf GTS DCT? Hoping to get one kaso na discontinued.

My officemate is happy with his daily-driven GTS. No shuddering or hesitation even in traffic.

The Lineartronic CVT in our XV is smooth. Too smooth in fact that it can lull you to a false sense of speed. Lagpas speed limit ka na pala without noticing.

The Jatco CVT in my in-law's Mirage is so-so. It does the job and that's it. It's barely used though so they haven't reported any issues yet.

The SkyActiv 6AT in our 3 is a fun little box. It holds gears when floored and blips the throttle aggressively on hard braking. It can get a bit jumpy in slow traffic but the heavy pedal helps you modulate the first few millimeters of travel.

My preference? Still the Sky 6AT. Feels like a manual without the inconvenience of a third pedal, the blandness of a CVT, or the complexity of a DCT. My wife seems to agree dahil mas preferred nyang i-daily ang 3 ko instead of her XV Umuwi yan one time and after she got out of the car sabi ko "hinataw mo no?" Sheepish grin "paano mo nalaman?". "Tagal mamatay ng fan oh."

There are very few neighborhood mechanics that can properly service even an old 4AT. Even the so-called "experts" just replace the parts with surplus ones and hope for the best. If the shop insists on using the cheapest ATF because "pare-pareho lang lahat yan" you best run away.

Sorry but CVTs are not designed to be repaired. Once it craps out, you have to replace the whole transmission.

Sealed componenent sya. At kung may magbukas man nyan, san hahanap ng pyesa? Wala kang mabibili sa casa na specific part ng cvt trans.

Even the best of the CVTs is still a CVT. Even a diehard Toyota fan like Scotty doesn't think it will last.

CVT clutch packs and valve bodies can be replaced (surplus usually). Madugo lang kung either belt/chain or pulley na ang problema. Those pulleys are under very high pressure to keep the drive belt/chain from slipping.
